Xiaomi today presented its new flagship, the Xiaomi Mi 9. But, as usual, the new model arrives with a somewhat more powerful special edition. This year they have been inspired by the movie Alita: Combat Angel to create the Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition, a mobile with a “transparent” back cover that increases its memory up to 12 GB of RAM.
In addition to the memory increase, the Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition also includes improvements to the camera. The main sensor maintains the 48 megapixels but it becomes somewhat brighter than that of the "normal" Mi 9. Its price, of course, is the highest in the range, around 530 euros at the exchange rate. We are going to know its characteristics.
Aesthetic and internal changes
The biggest change on an aesthetic level that we will see in the Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition is the “transparent” case. And we put it in quotes because the company itself has confirmed that the transparent finish is fake and that what the case shows is a simulation printed on it. But I can tell you that I had the opportunity to test the Xioami Mi 8 Pro last year and this so-called transparent case pays off.
Regarding the Mi 9, most of the features are preserved. The Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition maintains the 6.39-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,280 pixels.
It also equips the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. However, this special version is equipped with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Xiaomi itself has taken advantage of the presentation of the device to boast that it is the first mobile to be mass-produced with such an amount of memory.
And as for the battery, we have the same data, with a capacity of 3,300 milliamps. In addition, fast charging at 27W and wireless charging at 20W are maintained.
Main camera improvements
Although it is not the typical “Plus” or “Max” model that we see in other manufacturers, Xiaomi has wanted to offer users who opt for the top model an improvement in the photographic system.
The Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition takes the 48-megapixel main sensor a step further with a lens consisting of 7 lenses and an f / 1.47 aperture. That is, with respect to the Mi 9, we have a more complete and brighter lens.
The other two lenses that make up the triple camera system remain the same. That is, it includes a 16 megapixel wide-angle sensor and f / 2.2 aperture. Also a 12 megapixel telephoto lens that will allow us to get closer to the scene. We will have to wait to see if changes to the main sensor really improve photographic performance.
Price and availability
The Xiaomi Mi 9 Explorer Edition has been presented today in China, but it will be presented internationally on February 24 at the MWC in Barcelona. Its price in the Asian country will be 3,999 yuan, which in exchange would be about 524 euros.
We assume that, like last year, Xiaomi will bring both models to Spain. However, until next day 24 we will not know its real price in Europe. We will keep you informed.
