For some time now, the WhatsApp application is reporting notification problems on some Huawei, Xiaomi and Samsung phones. Far from being a problem with the application itself, it is most likely an error related to the management of the system as far as background processes are concerned. This time we have compiled several tricks to solve "WhatsApp messages do not arrive until I open it."
Solution 1: check WhatsApp data restrictions in the background
Although it is not usually common, it may be the case that the personalization layer of our phone (MIUI, EMUI, Samsung One UI…) restricts the WhatsApp data in the background, that is, when we are outside the application.
Checking it is as simple as going to the Android Settings; specifically to the Applications section. Within WhatsApp, we will go to the Data Use section and verify that the Background data option is checked.
Solution 2: check if notifications are active
Within the same settings of the previous step, we can check if WhatsApp notifications are active at the system level; specifically in the Notifications section. Here we will have to verify that, indeed, all the options are marked: group notifications, contact, calls and so on.
To ensure that WhatsApp sends notifications correctly to the system, we can perform the same check within the application itself. As simple as clicking on the three Options points within WhatsApp and accessing the settings.
In the Notifications section we will have to check that all the app options are active.
Solution 3: if you have a Xiaomi or Huawei mobile, activate Automatic Start and Run in the background
Mobile phones from Chinese brands, such as Xiaomi, Honor or Huawei, usually have restrictions when starting applications in the background. To configure this parameter we can resort to the Battery section within the Android Settings.
Within this section we will go to the option of Automatic start or Start of applications and select WhatsApp. Then we will activate the three available options: Automatic start, Secondary start and Run in the background. The name of these may vary depending on the layer of the mobile.
If our layer allows it, it is recommended to block the application in multitasking by opening the menu where recent applications are shown and leaving WhatsApp pressed until a lock appears.
Solution 4: turn on notification syncing and turn off battery saver
On Samsung mobiles, the system itself allows us to activate the synchronization of notifications and applications through the quick settings of the notification bar.
If we have activated the battery saving, it is most likely that this option is unchecked. Activating it is as simple as sliding the notification bar down and clicking on the Synchronize option.
In the event that this option does not appear, we will click on the editing pencil to add the adjustment manually. It is also recommended to disable energy saving using the same quick settings in the notification bar, since this can limit the use of applications in the background.
Solution 5: restart the phone
Sometimes, the problems of "I do not get WhatsApp until I open it" can be derived from a simple error in the system. Therefore, restarting the phone is the best way to alleviate the problems related to WhatsApp notifications.
From the official WhatsApp support it is recommended to turn off the phone for 30 seconds and turn it on again instead of proceeding to the usual method.
Solution 6: close your WhatsApp session and delete all the application data
Before proceeding with the complete uninstallation of the application, the WhatsApp support service recommends closing the session of our active user to solve any problem of “WhatsApp messages do not arrive until I open the application”.
The usual process to log out of WhatsApp is based on accessing the Android Settings; specifically to the Accounts section. Then, we will click on WhatsApp and select the option to Remove account. We can take the opportunity to verify that the Synchronization option is checked before proceeding with the logout.
Once we have eliminated the WhatsApp session, the next step is based on eliminating all the data from the phone app, a method that we can carry out through the same Android Settings, and more specifically in the Applications section.
Within the WhatsApp option we will click on Storage and select the two available options: Clear storage and Clear cache. With this, we will be able to obtain the cleanest version of WhatsApp possible without deleting the photos, videos or backup copies that the application may contain.
Solution 7: reinstall the app
Has none of the above worked? Then the error is probably an application bug. Reinstalling WhatsApp is the most recommended in these cases, although this time we will resort to pages such as APK Mirror to make sure we have the latest version of the application, since Google Play does not have the latest public version.
Before proceeding with the installation, we will have to make sure to uninstall WhatsApp and all its data and activate the option to Install applications from unknown sources in the Security section in Settings.
Finally, we will install the APK that we have previously downloaded and enter our user account following the traditional method. Ideally, do not restore any previous backups to have the cleanest version possible.
