After the fiasco of the Samsung Galaxy S7 with the update to Android 9 Pie, it is the turn of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. Both terminals today have the ninth version of Android under Samsung One UI 1.0, Samsung's renewed customization layer that it shares together with the S9 and S9 Plus and the S10, S10 Plus and S10e. The doubt falls precisely on the Android 10 update for the Samsung Galaxy S8. Are they going to update to Android 10, or will they be stuck in Android 9 Pie? We see it.
Android 10 update for the Samsung Galaxy S8: will it arrive or will it not arrive?
The Galaxy S8 is officially two years and seven months old today. Launched on March 29, 2017, the terminal falls within what Samsung considers to be 'obsolete mobiles'. Does this mean that it won't update to Android 10? History tells us that, in effect, it will not update.
If we take a look at its previous iterations, the future couldn't be more hopeless. The Galaxy S6, for example, reached the end of its useful life with Android Nougat 7.0. The Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, on the other hand, reached Android 9 Pie, a version that dates back to 2018.
We can therefore deduce that the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus will stay on Android 9 Pie. Neither the S8 nor any other mobile of the brand that has an Exynos 8 series processor. So far, Samsung has provided up to two years of updates to its high-end phones, and nothing seems to change the South Korean manufacturer.
The good news is that the phone will continue to be updated to receive security patches and fixes for at least an additional year. In any case, there is no type of official confirmation that denies or confirms this fact, so we will have to wait for the company to launch its traditional update calendar, which is expected for next January 2020.
All is not lost: turn to unofficial ROMs
Although the Galaxy S8 won't officially update to Android 10 - unless Samsung says otherwise - we can turn to the dozens of ROMs for the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus that the XDA Developers community has developed for the two Samsung flagships.
While it is true that most are based on Android 9 Pie, some of those in charge of its development have already confirmed that they are working on an Android 10 base. ROMs that bring us pure Android, modified versions of the system or even the latest features of the Samsung Galaxy S10 without the need to update to Android 10.
LineageOS for Samsung Galaxy S8
Probably the best ROM for the Samsung Galaxy S8 that we can install to date. Although it does not have the direct support of the LineageOS team, several XDA users have launched to develop the latest stable version (LineageOS 16) based on Android 9 Pie.
As far as aesthetics are concerned, the ROM in question inherits part of the Android AOSP lines with some additions that allow us to customize the Galaxy S8 to our liking. In addition to being one of the most stable and fastest ROMs on the Android scene, it does not have any type of error.
LightROM for Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 +
A curious creation by TeamExyKings that directly carries the ROM from the Samsung Galaxy S10 to the Galaxy S8 and S8 + along with all its software functions and features.
It is based on the latest version of Android 9 Pie for the S10, which makes us think that it will be updated to Android 10 when One UI 2.0 reaches the tenth iteration of the Galaxy. Otherwise, the ROM perfectly mimics all the functions of the original S10.
The only bug that users report has to do with unlocking the system by iris. Since the Samsung Galaxy S10 do not have this sensor, we will not be able to unlock the phone through it.
Pixel Experience for the Galaxy S8
As the name of the ROM suggests, Pixel Experience brings the AOSP experience to the Galaxy S8. Broadly speaking, it is a version based on pure Android whose essence tries to take us to the Google Pixel phone experience through the native interface of Android and its applications.
Specifically, the ROM in question includes all the original Google Pixel applications, wallpapers, fonts, icons and animations. The only bug that the ROM has in the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus is that the icon of the coverage signal does not indicate a real value, but a simulated one. The coverage, in any case, works perfectly.
Project Pixel for the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 +
A ROM very similar to the previous one and that again tries to bring the philosophy of the original Pixels to Samsung mobiles. Again Android 9 Pie is the base of Android that moves this ROM. The difference with respect to the previous one is found precisely in the absence of known bugs .
The rest of the characteristics are, a priori, very similar. Same interface, same Google applications, same fonts, same icons…
Resurrection Remix for the Galaxy S8
Along with LineageOS, Resurrection is one of the best ROMs on the Android scene. Based on the work of the Lineage team, part of its functions and characteristics are inherited precisely from the latter. And is that despite the fact that it has Android 9 Pie as a base, everything indicates that it will be updated to Android 10.
As far as functions are concerned, the ROM brings together the best features of ROMs such as LineageOS, SlimRom and OmniRom, three of the best-known creations currently on the XDA scene .
There are four characteristics that define the Resurrection ROM: performance, customization, optimization and energy efficiency.
