In the last two years, the market share occupied by Android smartphones has not stopped growing. The latest available data shows that three out of four smartphones in Europe are currently Android. And if we look only at the Spanish market, Google's operating system reaches almost 93% of all mobile terminals.
Android continues to increase its market share
According to the latest study by Kantar on the market for mobile operating systems "" corresponding to the first quarter of 2016 "", in Europe 75.6% of smartphones are Android. This represents a 7.1% increase in market share over the latest available figures.
For the analysis of the European market, the five most relevant countries for the mobile market have been considered: United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. And it is worth noting the particular case of Spain, where Android's share reaches almost 93% of the market.
According to Lauren Guenveur, one of Kantar's technology experts, Android's growth in European market share is the highest in the last two years. In addition, one of the interesting factors is that there is not a single brand behind this growth, but rather that in different European countries different companies with very varied products act with more or less force but have something in common: the operating system.
On the other hand, in the American market growth has been 7.3% to 65.5% of the market, and in China the Android share has exceeded 77% (it has grown 6% compared to the previous figures).
What is happening with iOS?
In the five European countries considered, the first quarter of March has been a period of decline for iOS, Apple's mobile operating system: its market share has gone from 20.2% to 18.9%. Windows has also fallen, specifically five points, down to 4.9% of the total market. The Chinese market is also beginning to notice a clear decline in Apple phones and Windows smartphones.
6.6% of new Android users come from Windows, and only 3.3% from iOS. 2.6% of new buyers of smartphones with iOS come from Windows.
From Kantar they assure that one of the main factors that drives the change from Windows to Android is the improvement in the user experience and the possibility of choosing between many brands and a wide range of models with different benefits and prices, something that iOS cannot offer because its entire offer is limited to Apple smartphones.
What Android smartphones do users want?
Windows users who switched to using Android in Italy and France (the two countries where the decline of Windows has been most noticeable, which has lost 10% of its market share) have opted for mid-range models from Huawei brands, Wiko and Asus. In the UK, however, the Samsung Galaxy J5 and Samsung Galaxy A5 models have had more weight.
In the United States, much of the success of Android in the first quarter of 2016 is due to the sales of the brands Samsung, Motorola and LG. Specifically, the Samsung Galaxy S7 remains the fifth best-selling mobile, while Motorola has managed to increase its market share by almost 3%.
In the Chinese market, the figures could change slightly in the second quarter, where the iPhone SE is expected to be very well received.
