Detail from the top of the triple rear camera of the Samsung Galaxy S10 +
Triple camera on the rear
The Samsung Galaxy S10 + has a triple camera on the back and a double camera on the front.
At the back, we have three lenses with a configuration similar to that of mobile phones such as the Huawei P20 Pro. The default sensor that we are going to use is a wide-angle type with Dual Pixel technology. With Dual Pixel, two photodiodes per pixel are used instead of the photodiode of other sensors, so twice as much information is captured when shooting the photo. On a practical level, this technology allows us a practically automatic image focus. It is also key when taking photos of night scenes with greater clarity. This sensor can automatically switch the aperture between f / 2.4 for more detail in photos in good light and f / 1.5 for low-light environments. Its resolution is 12 megapixels.
The second sensor is the super or ultra wide angle type. In this case, what is sought is that the user can capture as much space as possible with the photo, thanks to an angle of 123 degrees. It is a lens designed for group photos, landscape photos or large buildings that we want to take whole. Samsung has also included a technology to avoid, at least in part, the distortion in the photos - the fisheye effect. The results are quite good, although there will always be a bit of distortion. The resolution of the ultra wide angle lens is 16 megapixels.
The three main camera lenses of the Samsung Galaxy S10 + can be switched via the three icons: three trees for the ultra wide angle, two for the wide angle and one tree for the telephoto lens.
Finally, we have a 12 megapixel telephoto lens. Basically, the great attraction of this lens is to introduce a two-magnification optical zoom without loss of quality in the photo.

Rear camera main modes
Instagram mode
Samsung wanted to make a nod to current users and the most lively social network of the moment. The Instagram mode is designed so that we can take a quick photo or video to take it directly to your stories. The great advantage of this mode is that you can use the different lenses of the Galaxy S10 + when uploading the content, while if you work from the Instagram app you have access to the different effects (such as the video in Boomerang or the superzoom) but you get the main lens by default. In the end, the great advantage is the convenience of not leaving the camera to upload your stories. Of course, if you regularly use the special effects of Instagram you will not find it too useful. At least until these functions are introduced.

Food Mode
Another one of the ways that regular Instagram users will appreciate. The idea is as simple as highlighting the food plate and blurring the rest of the photo. In this case, what is used is an oval to mark the area of the plate that we can modify to our liking.
This is the Food mode of the Samsung Galaxy S10 +
Panorama
The classic panoramic mode. Honestly, at this point it is rare that you are going to use this mode. The Samsung Galaxy S10 + already includes a specific ultra-wide-angle sensor, but if it still falls short, you can use this classic functionality that captures a very wide image from side to side.
This is how Pro mode looks on the Samsung Galaxy S10 + with the option to change the opening degree of the main lens
Pro
The most comprehensive way to configure the camera with various values. Among them we have, for example, the ISO exposure, which if we configure it manually, it moves from 50 to 800. We can also manage other parameters such as white balance, color temperature or the type of focus from here. In addition, another function that I find very useful is to manually change the aperture of the main lens. As we mentioned before, the camera is capable of varying between an aperture of f / 1.5 and another of f / 2.4. The first for photos in low light environments and the second to achieve a greater level of detail in good conditions. To switch between the two you have to go to the second icon (the one after the ISO) and then press on the button with F2.4 or F1.5 depending on the aperture that is active.
Dynamic focus with the color effect to make the background black and white
Dynamic focus
What is commonly known as portrait or bokeh mode. As has happened for a couple of years with Samsung's top mobiles, in order for us to carry out the blur effect, the object or person we want to leave in the foreground must be placed at a distance of between one and two meters from the camera. This greatly limits the possibilities of getting the most out of the function. The reason is that to create the blur it is played with the main camera and the telephoto camera (with a zoom of two increases).
Samsung has added various blur effects. In addition to the standard, we have a rotation effect and a zoom effect. Personally, it seems to me that it does not go beyond curious photos and little else. What can give us more play is the color mode, which leaves the background in grayscale and keeps the foreground object in color. The results have been varied, sometimes not entirely fine, but when you grasp it well, it is a pretty spectacular photo.
Photo
It is the mode that you will take advantage of by default. From here you have the direct switch between the three lenses and the automatic scene detection. The Samsung Galaxy S10 + is capable of detecting up to 30 different scenes depending on the type of photos you are taking. The time it takes to detect each scene is about two seconds. The change between using it or not is subtle, but it brings more vividness to the color when it is necessary. By the way, in the upper part we can handle other functions such as the appearance that the photo will have (square mode for Instagram 1: 1, 3: 4 or 9:16), the variation of color and skin tone, the flash or the timer before taking the photo. These controls are very similar in the other photo modes.
Video
The Samsung Galaxy S10 + can record video in 16: 9 with a maximum resolution of UHD 4K at 60 fps. At this frequency the videos will give the impression of going much more fluid with the movement. You have to keep in mind that by default the videos are recorded at Full HD resolution and 30 fps, so you will have to change the value through the configuration nut at the top. Another value that is worth playing with is the hand that is in the upper central part. What is configured here is what Samsung calls “Super Stable”. That is, an advanced video stabilizer that uses the super wide angle lens to help keep the image shake-free.
Super slow
One of the modes that I liked the least, due to the changes that Samsung has introduced. Before you could record a video and mark the moments when you wanted to record in super slow motion. Now the video is recorded automatically for a short time. Then if you can vary the slow motion moments, but it seems to me that it limits a lot the game you can give it. At the top you can activate that the camera itself detects the movement to start recording in slow motion. You can also vary between 0.4 seconds in slow motion and 0.8 seconds.
Slow motion
A very simple way to record content in slow motion but without reaching the level of super slow motion.
Fast camera
Otherwise. No great options.
The two front lenses of the Samsung Galaxy S10 + are perforated on the screen
Double front camera
Samsung has also wanted to give the front camera a push. For the first time, its flagship terminal includes a double lens for selfies. The main lens is 10 megapixels, with aperture of f / 1.9 and Dual Pixel technology. The second 8 megapixel resolution RGB- type lens is designed to capture depth of field. That is, its main purpose is to be able to shoot photos with blur with a more professional result.
Front camera main modes
As for the front camera, the options it offers are much more limited.
Photo
The default mode. In this case we have an icon to choose a closer view or a wider viewing angle. It must be said, the difference between the two is not so high, so it can be used to include a head that has been cut in half, but not for selfies of very large groups or to photograph yourself with a large building behind. In the upper part, the most interesting thing is the choice of the format that the photo will have.
If it was in the rear camera, it could not be missing in the selfies. It is very similar in use to that of the main camera.
Dynamic focus
Here if you are going to give a lot of play to the front camera of the Samsung Galaxy S10 +. With the advantage that it does not need you to be at a certain distance to work. This is thanks to the second RGB depth sensor. We also have several effects (the same as in the main camera). Again, the one that can give you the best results outside the standard is the color area, which leaves the area that you do not want to highlight in black and white.
Video
The big news here is that the front camera of the Samsung Galaxy S10 + can record videos in 4K UHD resolution. Something that you must activate through the camera settings.
Other general modes to consider
In addition to the modes of each camera, the Samsung Galaxy S10 + also includes two specific modes. We speak on the one hand of Bixby Vision, and on the other of the AR Emoji.
We went to a supermarket to test the performance of Bixby Vision
Bixby Vision
We start with the mode that gets its name from Samsung's smart assistant. It is divided into two great tools. The first one is called Lens and it basically analyzes what you are looking at through the camera to identify it. Here you have to give a little capon to Samsung because they have not yet translated the message that appears on the screen advising you to activate other methods of the lens. Our advice is that yes, if you are going to use this tool, it is best to activate all the modes that are available through the settings.
This is done by pressing on the three vertical dots that appear at the top of the screen and on the Settings button. From there you will be able to see the modes and activate them, as well as knowing which services you are going to access. And what are those modes?
Images: Search the Internet for images similar to the scene you are focusing on. Keep in mind that the service that it takes advantage of when doing the search is the Social network. You will have to accept the terms of use of the network. It can be useful if, for example, you are in front of a monument that you do not know, or to compare the photos that other users have taken on the same site.
Text: Analyze and save the text on the screen that you are focusing on. It uses Google technology. The good thing is that you can extract this text and then use it in other apps.
Wine: For wine lovers or to show off in front of your friends. This mode is able to recognize the bottle of wine in front of you and give you details about the vintage and its quality. Just out of curiosity - and laughter if you're not an expert - it's worth giving it a try.
Food: One of the modes that includes at the same time the data collected from different platforms such as YouTube, or Azumio. In this case, when pointing to any food dish, it will explain the calories you are going to eat, the nutritional information of the dish or even recipes to prepare it. Without a doubt, a very complete way.
QR code: Perhaps the simplest of all we have tried. It is simply a QR code reader to visit web pages that are linked to that code.
Location: In this case, it uses the location of the mobile and augmented reality to provide data on nearby prominent sites (such as restaurants or monuments), leisure offers and even the time spent on the site. In this case, Bixby connects with both Foursquare and Groupon and The Weather Channel.
Simultaneous translation: The text that appears on the screen will be automatically translated into the language that we have marked. By using Google technology, the truth is that it is quite useful if we go on a trip to a foreign country.
In addition to the lens modes, Bixby Vision also differs from another section dedicated to Apps. It is understood that the difference is that they are third-party apps that are not necessarily within the basic repertoire of the mobile. The two AR experiences that come by default have not seemed very powerful to me, but they are useful in some cases. Especially the first. With the Furniture app we can scan a room and then see how it would look with different furniture. The repertoire is quite complete and if you are doing a house renovation they can help you get an idea. The one with sunglasses seems less useful to us unless you are passionate about this accessory.
AR Emoji
We finish the review of the camera modes of the Samsung Galaxy S10 + with AR Emoji. These are the nice characters that you can create to react to your gestures and movements and then share the creations through WhatsApp or other means. Honestly, although they made a lot of noise with the appearance of the iPhone X, it is not something that is going to make the difference between buying a phone or not. But they do assure you a laugh with friends.
One of the most interesting functions you have is to create your own emoji. That is, a character that resembles you and that you can then turn into animated GIFs and moving videos. Honestly, the performance of this function still leaves me some doubts. Especially in the movements of the eyes of the characters, which sometimes seem prisoners of a nervous tic. By the way, Samsung has deployed a good collection of accessories so that you can dress the emoji that you have created with your features, including caps, sweaters, pants, hairstyles, etc.
Interesting settings and some tips
Although you may have already noticed that there are an extensive number of functions in the different modes, it is also worth taking a look at the camera settings.
Among the options that we find most interesting is the defect detection option, activated if you don't touch anything. It will alert you in case it finds blurry people after taking the photo or if there is a smudge on the camera lens.
Another point that you should activate is the correction of the photos with the super wide angle camera. You have to bear in mind that with this type of lens the images appear somewhat distorted with a fisheye effect. You can largely correct this effect via the button within Save Options and Super Wide Correction.
I also recommend that you decide the type of size your videos will have both in the rear and front cameras, since by default they are recorded in Full HD resolution. In the main camera you can also choose the fluidity they will have (30 fps or 60fps). You have to bear in mind that if you opt for 4K videos you will have to face a greater limitation in the time that can be recorded in one go. This is due to the maximum size the phone can handle in a single file.
If you are a lover of GIFs, you can easily create them by holding down the camera button. To do this, you have to go to the Camera Settings and click on Hold down Camera and the Create GIF option.
