- Other camera modes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is here. One of the best - if not the best - phones of the year. For power, for its screen, for the advanced functions it incorporates and for unique accessories such as the S Pen. And also, of course, for your camera. The Note 9 incorporates one of the most powerful photographic sets that we can find today in a smartphone. We have decided to gather in this article a review of all the camera modes that you will find in the Note 9, both the main and secondary cameras. Are you missing any mode or function in Samsung's proposal?
Samsung Galaxy Note 9 camera interface
Camera app
Samsung's camera application follows a continuous line with what we have seen in the latest launches of the firm. By default, the names of the modes and buttons are displayed vertically (that is, with the mobile held in the natural position with one hand). Unlike in other cases, the interface only adapts half when we turn the mobile horizontally. The buttons below do move, but the shooting modes remain in the same orientation.
The use is quite intuitive, since to switch between modes you have to drag (laterally or vertically depending on the position of the mobile) and the same to switch between the main camera and the camera for selfies. On the right (according to the image above) we have the buttons for filters, flash or settings.

At the rear, the Note 9 bets on a photographic set with a double lens. The main one has a resolution of 12 megapixels and dual aperture. During the day and in good light conditions, the aperture of f / 2.4 is chosen. Thanks to this, clearer photos are obtained. When there is less light, the aperture of f / 1.5 is activated automatically, vital for obtaining more defined photos in these conditions.
The second lens is also 12 megapixel, telephoto type. It is the one used to achieve an optical zoom (without quality loss) of two increases. It also allows us to create the bokeh or blur effects of the background.
Panoramic mode
Panorama
It is the classic mode that we have been enjoying for a long time in mobile cameras. The idea is to make a side sweep trying to keep the pulse to create a panoramic photo. In addition to having a good pulse, it is important to be patient so that the movement is stable and the photo comes out as well as possible.
Manual focus is a very useful tool in the Pro mode of the Note 9
Pro
The Pro mode of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 camera is designed for those users who want to control all the camera parameters and achieve more professional cut results. In this mode we have a series of parameters on the right side of the screen such as the type of white balance, the exposure to light, the degree of aperture… In addition, I really liked the option to manually control the focus to via a slider. Without a doubt, a very complete mode for advanced users and lovers of photography.
After taking a dynamic focus photo, you can change the background blur.
Dynamic focus
It is the name given to the bokeh or blur effect inside the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 camera. To carry out this mode you have to place the camera at a distance of between one meter and one and a half meters from the object or person that we are going to. to photograph. When we are at the appropriate distance we will see a message on the screen that will warn us that we can create the effect. Then we can choose the level of blur of the background between seven different levels.
By the way, if we have the dual capture icon active, the camera will save an image with the normal camera and another with the telephoto lens (a closer view and a wide angle). We can see any of these two captures when opening the photo in the gallery, in addition to adjusting the background blur afterwards.
Automatic
The quintessential mode. Here it is the camera's own software that decides which are the best parameters for each photograph taken. We can activate the x2 zoom with a button on the top right and configure simple parameters such as the presence of flash or quick filters.
Super slow
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9's camera is capable of recording 960 fps super slow motion videos (in HD quality). It should be borne in mind that by default only a scene of about one second is recorded in slow motion. The user can choose between having the camera capture movement to start this mode or decide when to manually record slow motion. However, we recommend enabling multiple slow motion scene capture in order to create fuller videos. This can be activated through the settings in the camera app.
AR Emoji
Emojis once again have an important place in Samsung's new flagship terminal. In the Galaxy S9 they were released, and now they continue their way in the Note. On the one hand, we have a good collection of masks to transform our face and animated characters. In the first case, these skins work in the same way as what we have seen in apps like Snapchat and later Instagram. In the second, an animated character comes to life by moving his face with our gestures. It is a fun mode but I have the feeling that there is a long way to go so that the copy of our gestures is faithful to reality (there are many occasions when it does not capture the movements of the face well). Among the available characters we have a rabbit or a cat.
But probably the most interesting option is to create our own emoji. In this case, what you need to do is take a photo of yourself and then add details, accessories and clothing to the avatar. Like animated characters, it will react to the gestures of our face.
Fast camera interface on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9
Fast camera
A mode to create interesting or funny videos in fast motion. What I liked the most compared to other cameras is that you can choose the specific speed increase that the video will have (in many you only have a default speed). This is an increase of 4 times, 8 times, 16 times or 32 times the normal speed.
Food
Curiously, it is a mode very loved by instagrammers but it is not activated by default in the camera of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9. Within the settings you can find it in Edit camera modes. As usual, the idea is to highlight a circle that we can change in size and in which, in theory, our plate will be found. The rest of the scene darkens and blurs more so that the absolute protagonist is the plate. We also have a bar to change the color temperature towards colder or warmer tones.
Slow motion
Finally, another mode that does not appear by default and that we do not fully understand why it appears separate from the super slow mode. In this case, the great advantage of the slow motion mode is that we do not have as strong a limitation as in the case of the super slow motion. Specifically, we can have slow motion action in a video of just over six minutes (and in the interval that interests us the most).
Samsung Galaxy Note 9 selfie camera modes
As for the camera for selfies, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 incorporates a simple 8 megapixel lens. Of course, with an aperture of f / 1.7, which translates into very good photos in low light conditions. As you would expect, it has face recognition and the tactical advantage of using the S Pen itself remotely to shoot photos.
Example of the blur effect on the selfie camera of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9
Selfie focus
Although it is not a dual camera, the Note's secondary camera is capable of creating bokeh or blur effects through software. When taking the photo, it is recommended that the arm is extended so that the distance is optimal and the effect is better. In this case, we will not be able to change the intensity of the blur as in the case of the main camera. Be that as it may, the truth is that this mode is quite successful and generally quite quality compositions are obtained.
By the way, in this mode, as in Selfie, we can use two controls to vary the color of the photo and the tone of the foot.
Example of selfie taken with the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 camera
Selfie
The default selfie mode. In addition to these skin tone and color settings, access to a number of filters for the photo (shared with the main camera) is also included. Within the settings we can configure aspects such as showing the palm of the hand to take a photo or correct the shape of the face if it appears distorted.
AR Emoji
We have already talked about the AR Emoji mode in the main camera. In the case of the selfie camera, this mode makes even more sense and works in the same way.
Note 9 selfie panorama mode
Panorama selfie
This is the mode that seems more complex to us than we have seen. The idea is good, take a panorama to the selfie camera to be able to take group photos. However, the mechanics itself is quite complex since you have to have a good pulse and also keep your arm extended while you sweep so that everyone can come out and also part of the bottom. On the positive side, the truth is that the help guides of the camera itself are useful and the work when rebuilding the image is quite satisfactory.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 offers a good collection of bonus effects to download
Other camera modes of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8
Apart from these camera-specific modes, there are also some common modes and filters. The most interesting is undoubtedly the Bixby Vision mode. We have already seen it in previous deliveries of the Galaxy and it is repeated through a button that we can see in the Automatic and Selfie modes. Bixby Vision uses augmented reality to offer us places of interest in the vicinity. You also have the option of analyzing an object that appears on your screen and looking for similar products to buy on Amazon. Or recognize a place that we are focusing on and offer information about it, as well as similar photos.
Finally, we have a series of filters to create curious compositions in both the rear and front cameras. These are filters that seek different effects such as creating the sensation of being in front of an old photo, black and white effects and other proposals in a similar vein. But the most interesting thing is that if we give the option to download more filters we can access a fairly wide gallery that takes effects from different sources, such as Line or Samsung itself.
