Table of contents:
5G is already among us. Vodafone has been the first operator to bring the 5G network to Spain and it is already available in several cities in the country. A type of connection that promises much faster upload and download speeds and where we can notice it mainly in content downloads, games or other tasks that require almost extreme latency.
Okay, 5G looks very good, but… what phones are compatible? What rates are there with a 5G network? We review the compatible models and rates that we can purchase today.
5G Compatible Rates
Let's start with the different rates that Vodafone provides. As I have mentioned, it is the first - and for the moment, only - operator that offers this connection in Spain. Although some of its rates had been updated with support for 5G networks when the launch took place (last June 15), not all were compatible. Now, all contracts support 5G.
The most interesting are the unlimited ones, since being faster, the 5G network spends quite a few megabytes. In this case, as there is no limit, we will not have problems. There are three pricing options with infinite data. The cheapest option is priced at about 41 euros and includes unlimited data and calls, with 2 mb of speed. The second option, for 46 euros per month, includes all this with 10 mb of speed. Finally, the unlimited total with the maximum speed and for 50 euros per month.
In the basic rates we can choose the Mini Mobile, with 3 GB of data and 200 minutes of calls for 20 euros per month. Or, the Mobile Extra, with 6 GB of data and unlimited calls for 30 euros per month.
UPDATE: As of July 8, 5G is also available in some prepaid rates.
We go with 5G mobiles. At the moment, there are 4 terminals that are marketed in Spain with support for 5G networks.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G
We start with the cheapest. The Mi Mix 3 5G. This is a variant of the Mi Mix 3 with 5G connectivity, so its price is somewhat higher. It costs about 720 euros, although in Vodafone we can get it for 20 euros a month for 36 months and an initial payment of 0 euros + the rate we choose. In the Xiaomi online store its price is 600 euros, although it is the version with 64 GB of storage.
In addition to the support of 5G networks with a speed of up to 2 GB, it also has a 6.29-inch panel with Full HD + resolution and a screen ratio of 93.4 percent, since it has a sliding system where it hides its dual front camera, with 24 + 2 megapixel resolution. The main one is 12 and 2 megapixels.
In performance we find a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, accompanied with 6 GB of RAM and an X50 modem for the 5G connection. In storage we find two variants: 64 and 128 GB. All this with an autonomy of 3,800 mAh.
Huawei Mate 20 X 5G
The last to arrive, but one of the most interesting. This terminal was launched in its normal variant as a mobile focused on the most gamers for its huge 7.2-inch screen (Full HD + and OLED technology) and its Kirin 980 processor with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. You now have a Balong 5000 module, for 5G networks.
In the cameras section we find a 40 megapixel Leica triple sensor, a second 20 wide-angle lens and a third 8 megapixel telephoto sensor. This triple camera is supported by artificial intelligence through a mode that selects the parameters automatically depending on the scene. The selfie camera, which is housed in a waterdrop-type notch, is 24 megapixels. We do not forget its autonomy: 4,200 mAh with fast charge.
The Huawei Mate 20 X 5G can be purchased free at Espacio Huawei, the company's new store opened in Madrid just a few days ago. It is also available on Vodafone at a price of 25 euros per month for 36 months and an initial payment of 0 euros.
Samsung Galaxy S10 5G
Samsung's flagship also has a 5G variant that can be purchased from Vodafone for € 30 per month for 36 months. This device is an even bigger and more powerful version than the Galaxy S10 +. It has a quad sensor on the back, where it is accompanied by the same configuration plus a ToF lens for depth of field. And the same happens in the camera for selfies: two lenses + a third ToF sensor.
The Samsung Galaxy S10 5G has a 6.7-inch panel with a QHD + resolution and AMOLED technology. It is accompanied by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, so we find the same 5G module that the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G has. The cash price of this device is 1,080 euros, being one of the most expensive 5G terminals that we can find in the market. Of course, also one of the most powerful.
LG V50 ThinQ 5G
The LG V50 ThinQ with its second screen.
We end up with the LG V50 ThinQ 5G. This LG flagship has a very interesting feature beyond its compatibility with this network: its second screen. Another panel can be attached to maximize the experience when playing, chatting or browsing with the terminal. Beyond this panel, the LG V50 ThinQ has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, accompanied by 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, which is expandable via micro SD. It also has a triple camera: the main 16-megapixel sensor, the secondary 12-megapixel wide-angle sensor and a third telephoto camera for photos. We also have a double sensor on the front with a resolution of 8 and 5 megapixels (wide angle)
The LG V50 ThinQ 5G can be purchased exclusively with Vodafone for a cash payment of 900 euros. Or, for 25 euros per month for 36 months and an initial payment of 0 euros.
