The Redmi 9A has just been launched in the Spanish market as the cheapest bet of the Chinese manufacturer. The terminal comes to supplant the Xiaomi Redmi 8A, one of the company's best-selling models on Amazon for its value for money. If we focus on the technical section, the truth is that the differences between the Xiaomi Redmi 9A vs Redmi 8A are not as notable as one might expect. In fact, the improvements are minor if we compare them with other models of the Asian firm, as we will see below.

The Xiaomi Redmi 9A is bigger (and less secure)
So is. The new generation has grown in size, specifically 0.3 inches. This also affects the size, as the Redmi 9A is 0.8 centimeters higher than the Redmi 8A and 0.2 centimeters wider. Interestingly, the device is thinner, with a difference of just 0.04 centimeters.
Redmi 9A.
Another of the great differences that we find between these two models comes from the hand of protection. While the Redmi 8A has Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection, the Redmi 9A lacks protection against drops and scratches, or at least Xiaomi has not specified it on its website.
Otherwise, the two terminals have a similar aesthetic, with a notch in the shape of a drop of water and a rear part made entirely of plastic. Neither of the two terminals have a fingerprint sensor, so we will have to resort to Android facial unlocking to protect the system.
Technical section: Qualcomm vs Mediatek
In this new generation, Xiaomi has chosen Mediatek as the manufacturer of its processors to reduce the cost of the Redmi 9A. Specifically, the phone uses the new Mediatek Helio G25, while the Redmi 8A has the well-known Qualcomm Snapdragon 439. In practice, the Qualcomm model is not only more powerful, it is also more efficient despite the fact that both are manufactured in 12 nanometers.
Redmi 8A.
The inclusion of a Qualcomm processor also brings added advantages, such as charging technology, which we will talk about below, or compatibility with Google's camera, the famous Google Camera, GCam or Google Cam. If we focus on the memory configurations, the two share the same RAM and ROM tandem: 2GB of RAM and 32GB of eMMC 5.1-like storage. The Redmi 8A also adds a version with 3 GB of RAM, although it is not available in Spain.
Without many differences in the photographic section
Xiaomi's most economical series is not characterized by offering the best photographic quality. And it was not going to be any different with the Redmi 9A. The phone has a single 13 megapixel rear camera. Xiaomi has not given details about the size of the sensor or the focal aperture of this, so we cannot draw conclusions if we compare it with the Redmi 8A.
Google Camera.
Speaking of its predecessor, the Redmi 8A uses a 12-megapixel sensor with an f / 1.8 focal aperture. At the front, the Redmi 9A opts for a 5-megapixel sensor, while the Redmi 8A features an 8-megapixel camera. To this must be added the compatibility with the Google camera, which helps to obtain better results than the native Camera application.
Similar autonomy but with different charging technologies
The evolution of the Redmi 9A in this section is practically non-existent, at least in theory. And is that despite the fact that the two phones have a 5,000 mAh module, the autonomy should be higher in the Redmi 8A. First, for the efficiency of its processor. And second, for having a smaller screen. But this does not stop there.
Although it may seem illogical, the Redmi 9A has a micro USB charging connector, while the Redmi 8A has a USB Type-C port. A Having a Qualcomm processor, the latter is compatible with Quick Charge 3.0, which reconciles the cargo loaders up to 18 W. The Redmi 9A, for its part, only supports charging peaks of up to 10 W. Coincidentally, the two devices incorporate a 10 W charger in the box, so the difference becomes less in practice.
Connectivity: Bluetooth here, Bluetooth there
The differences in the connectivity section are negligible. In fact, the only tangible difference between the Redmi 8A vs Redmi 9A is the incorporation of Bluetooth 5.0 technology. The Redmi 8A, meanwhile, has Bluetooth 4.2. The rest of the connection are practically identical: WiFi b / g / n, FM radio, GPS, 3.5 mm port for headphones…
So which mobile is worth it?
With all these data on the table, it's time to draw conclusions. In purely theoretical terms, the Redmi 8A is a superior mobile: better charging technology, more powerful processor, compatibility with Google's camera, greater autonomy and so on. Ironically, it is also more expensive (about 10 or 15 euros of difference), at least at the time of this writing.
Xiaomi Redmi 9A.
The reason? Xiaomi is getting rid of this model to incentivize sales of the Redmi 9A. To this must be added that the terminal will foreseeably have a broader support for updates by the brand, not to mention the difference in sizes between devices.
