- This is what the Disney + application consumes on your mobile
- How much data do HBO, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix consume?
Disney + is already available in Spain from the 24th of this month. The platform is available in a multitude of formats and has an application for Android and iOS. If we have used the mobile version of Disney + we can select the quality of reproduction of the service. Like Netflix and other streaming platforms, Disney + has quality options: High, Medium and Standard. But how much data does the app actually consume on mobile? We see it below.
This is what the Disney + application consumes on your mobile
Disney +, also known as Disney Plus, has arrived as one of the streaming services that offers the highest quality of reproduction. The platform promises to play content in 4K quality with HDR10 and Dolby Audio certification. Precisely for this reason, the data consumption in the mobile application is significantly higher than that of Netflix, for example.
According to data from reviews.org , the consumption of the application after playing an episode of The Mandalorian in maximum quality (4K and HDR) is as follows:
- 1.5 GB per 40 minute episode.
- 3.8GB per 104 episode minutes (1 hour and 54 minutes).
Activating the data saving mode of the application, the average consumption is as follows:
- 1 GB for 40 minutes of episode.
- 2.6 GB per 104 episode minutes.
If we resort to the Medium quality, that is, HD, the consumption of the application reflects the following figures:
- 1.1 GB for 30 minutes of episode.
- 2.2 GB for 1 episode hour.
In summary, the general consumption of Disney + in its three quality options is as follows:
- SD quality: 0.75 GB for 30 minutes of episode and 1.5 GB for 1 hour.
- HD quality: 1.1 GB for 30 minutes of episode and 2.2 GB for 1 hour.
- 4K quality: 1.5GB per 30 minute episode and 3GB per hour (up to 4GB if Dolby Audio compatible).
Obviously, the weight of each episode, movie or documentary can vary depending on multiple factors, such as maximum quality, HDR support or compatibility with Dolby Audio systems. All in all, these data help us to make a more or less precise estimate.
How much data do HBO, Amazon Prime Video and Netflix consume?
To contrast the data consumed by the Disney + application with that of other platforms, we have made a comparison with Amazon Prime Video, HBO and Netflix, three of the most popular services of 2020.
The data extracted from the Netflix page leave us the following estimate:
- Low Quality: 0.15 GB for 30 minutes of episode and 0.3 GB for 1 hour.
- Medium Quality: 0.35 GB for 30 minutes of episode and 0.7 GB for 1 hour.
- High Quality: up to 3 GB per hour per device for HD resolutions and up to 7 GB per hour per device for 4K resolutions.
- Automatic: Automatically adjusts to provide the highest possible quality based on the speed of your Internet connection.
As for HBO, the application does not allow you to select the quality of playback from any of the existing formats. Since it does not have support for 4K resolution displays, the estimate that some pages have made is 1 GB per hour of playback.
It's the turn of Amazon Prime Video. Although the application allows to know the size of the files before downloading them to play them later without a line, the most recent estimates speak of considerably higher figures when it comes to playing the episodes in streaming, that is, Internet forgiveness.
- SD quality: 0.9 GB for 1 hour of episode.
- HD quality: 2 GB for 1 hour of episode.
- 4K quality: 5.4 GB for 1 hour of episode.
