Last February, Sony introduced its new flagship, Sony Xperia XZ2, to its catalog. The device did not arrive alone, it did so hand in hand with two more versions, Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact and Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium (in April). All three have some notable differences, but many more things in common, especially at the power and camera level. In fact, all models feature a Snapdragon 845 processor, Qualcomm's latest beast, as well as a 19-megapixel main camera.

Display and layout

Both the Sony Xperia XZ2 and the XZ2 Premium and Compact feature an infinity panel with an 18: 9 aspect ratio. However, they have a different size, more than enough reason for you to decide on one model or another. The Sony Xperia XZ2 has a 5.7-inch LCD screen with FullHD + resolution. For its part, the Xperia XZ2 Compact offers the same resolution, but in its case the size drops slightly, down to 5 inches. The XZ2 Premium is the one that falls in the middle with its 5.5 inches. In addition, in your case the resolution grows up to 4K, that is, four times higher than Full HD.

It is true that this feature earns it some points over its range brothers. However, the company has included different technologies in the three teams that provide better visualization. One of them is the TRILUMINOS, which gives the screens more brightness and clarity. To give you an idea, it offers a 138 percent sRGB color rendering. This means that they are capable of displaying more colors than those of other rival devices. The Xperia XZ2 also include high dynamic range or HDR. What does this mean? Basically, we will see more intervals between the lights and shadows of an image. Thus, the shapes, elements and colors can be better identified.

As if this were not enough, we also have X-Reality technology, which contributes to higher quality when viewing any type of content. To all this we must add that the panels of the equipment are reinforced by the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 system, which provides greater resistance to bumps or falls.

In terms of design, the three teams are very similar, except, of course, for their measurements. Of the three, the least heavy is the Compact. Living up to its name, the device has a weight of 168 grams. To give you an idea of ​​the difference, the standard version weighs 198 grams and the Premium 195 grams. We have already said that the front part has practically no frame presence. In any case, they are still much thicker than other competing mobiles, such as the Samsung Galaxy S9 or the LG V30.

If we turn them over, we see that the Japanese firm has curved the back in glass. This is very reminiscent of the domed design of the Motorola. The front part has also been dressed in crystal. The sides, on the other hand, are made of aluminum. There is no missing fingerprint reader on its back. If you pay attention, the arrangement of the cameras is different in the three models. In the Xperia XZ2 it is located close to the center, a little above the fingerprint reader. On the XZ2 Premium it is located in the upper left corner. In the XZ2 Compact it is also shown near the central zone, but higher than in the standard model.

Power and memory

All three Sony Xperia XZ2s are powered by the latest Qualcomm processor. We refer to the Snapdragon 845, an eight-core chip (four operating at 2.7 GHz and the other four operating at 1.7 GHz). It is manufactured following the 10 nanometer process, which translates into less energy expenditure. The processor goes hand in hand with a 4 GB RAM, 6 GB in the case of the Premium model. The internal storage capacity does match in these three versions. It is 64 GB, expandable by using microSD memory cards.

It is clear that when choosing one model or another it will not help you much to pay attention to the power section. As we have explained, all three are equipped with the latest Qualcomm processor. Of course, with the exception of the RAM issue, the Premium has a 6 GB instead of 4 GB. Except for this detail, it would be interesting if you also had others. For example the camera, as we will see below.

Photographic section

We already talked about the difference in the placement of the main cameras. In any case, all three offer the same 19-megapixel resolution with an f / 2.0 aperture. At the moment, these phones do not follow the pattern of other high-end rival models, which have long succumbed to the charms of the dual camera. In our tests we were able to verify that the Xperia XZ2 and, therefore, its variants, leaves us with a bittersweet taste. All boast a good degree of aperture to achieve wider shots, although not at the level of a wide-angle lens of its own, as is the case with the LG V30.

Despite this, in their favor we can say that they have instant focus, so you will never find a blurred photo. In turn, they offer a predictive trigger function. In this way, you will not lose that moment that sometimes does not have time to immortalize. On the other hand, you can also use video recording with 4K resolution and HDR. Another feature that we can highlight of these sensors is the super slow motion function at 960 fps with FHD resolution. Sony repeats this way with one of the most outstanding functions of recent times.

Regarding the front sensor, we do already see some important difference. The Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium is the only one of the three to include a 13-megapixel sensor. The other two teams come with a 5 megapixel one, quite normal for taking quality selfies. In addition, the front sensor of the XZ2 Premium also boasts an LED flash. But not everything is bad in the secondary camera of the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact. Like the vitaminized model, these two also have a 3D mode, which scans your face in three dimensions to be used later in all kinds of compositions. The most original are those that transform you into an augmented reality character that moves around a room.

Another detail that you should take into account when choosing one model or another is the battery issue. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium is the one that equips a larger one. It is 3,230 mAh and also has Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging and wireless charging. The standard version is 3,180 mAh, also with fast charging and wireless charging. The XZ2 Compact has to settle for a 2,870 mAh one, which also does not have fast charging or wireless charging.

To take care of the battery life, Sony has also included a smart charging mode that charges the mobile up to 90% at night. Before you get up, the load will be complete. You can also use the Stamina energy saving mode, which never hurts for when we want to scratch a few more minutes of autonomy.

System and connections

The Xperia XZ2 are governed by Android 8 Oreo, the latest version of Google's mobile platform. This is accompanied by the customization layer of the Xperia Launcher company. Oreo places them on the same level as other high-end models that also already work with this version. Android 8 is a faster and smoother system than its predecessors. It includes smart notifications, as well as a way to watch videos while using other applications. On the other hand, it contributes to energy saving and charging times.

At the connection level, the devices come with a wide range of options: LTE cat. 18, WiFi ac / n / MIMO, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C, GPS or NFC.
