Sony renews its high-end with the new Sony Xperia XZ Premium. The company maintains its characteristic squarer design, which we already saw in the Sony Xperia XZ, but incorporates some novelties such as glass. Another great novelty is the screen with 4K resolution and compatible with HDR images.

But it is not the only thing that Sony's new flagship offers. Inside we find the latest Qualcomm processor, a Snapdragon 835. We knew it was coming, it was only a matter of time, but we didn't know which company would be the first to implement it. 4K resolution and HDR reaches mobile screens with the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. And is that the Japanese company has decided to use a 5.5-inch screen with 4K resolution and compatible with HDR images.

But the resolution isn't the only thing that stands out from the screen. As usual, the company has deployed all the technology that we see on its televisions. On the one hand, the screen uses Triluminos technology, which improves color reproduction.

On the other hand, the X-Reality engine of Bravia televisions is included, which analyzes each image in real time to make it sharper and eliminate some of the noise it may have. And with Dynamic Contrast, the depth of blacks is enhanced to enhance dark scenes. All this added to a reproduction of the sRGB color space of 138%. That is, we have a whole 4K TV in our hands.

Super slow motion

The photographic section has always been one of the strengths of Sony phones. And the XZ Premium Xperia show it again, with a main camera with Exmor 1 / 2.3 "sensor and 19 megapixels. Accompanying this sensor the company has implemented several features to improve the image. For example, we have a predictive capture system and another system that reduces noise in photographs.

On the other hand, the Xperia XZ Premium incorporates a predictive hybrid autofocus system and a 5-axis stabilization system. All this adorned with the possibility of recording videos with 4K resolution, but also with super slow motion at spectacular 960fps. To give you an idea, the slow motion of the Samsung Galaxy S7 records at 240fps.

Sony hasn't forgotten about the front camera. We have a 1 / 3.06 ″ sensor, 13 megapixels and f / 2.0 aperture. In addition, it incorporates a 22-millimeter wide-angle lens, with a maximum ISO of ISO6400.

Timeless design

It is clear that design is not Sony's priority when it comes to making a mobile. We say that the Sony Xperia XZ Premium has a timeless design because the company continues to maintain its peculiar style. We have a design very similar to the Sony Xperia XZ. That is, the display is framed on the front with very thin bezels on the sides, but the top and bottom bezels are still very large.

We do see changes in the rear, which is now glass. A crystal that is very elegant, but that is a fingerprint magnet. The silver-colored version of the terminal makes a very interesting mirror effect, but is somewhat impaired by fingerprints.

The fingerprint reader is located on the side of the terminal. And, as Sony is accustomed to us, the Xperia XZ Premium is resistant to water and dust, with an IP65 / 68 certification.

It seemed to us that, despite the use of glass, the terminal does not quite offer us the feeling of being in front of a premium device. Rounded edges make it easy to grip, but sharp edges on the top and bottom detract from some comfort.

Very powerful technical set

A screen of such caliber needed a powerful heart. Sony has opted for the latest Qualcomm processor, a Snapdragon 835. A powerful processor consisting of eight cores, four running at 2.5 GHz and another four at 1.9 GHz, and an Adreno 540 GPU. Accompanying this powerful processor we have 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal UFS storage.

In terms of autonomy, the Sony Xperia XZ Premium incorporates a 3,230 milliamp battery. The battery includes Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging system and Qnovo's adaptive charging technology. The company's well-known Stamina Modes cannot be absent. However, we will have to wait to find out how this battery deals with such a high resolution screen.

Finally, Sony has updated the connectivity of the Xperia XZ Premium to bring it up to date. To charge the terminal we have a USB 3.1 Type-C connector. It also incorporates Bluetooth 4.2 connectivity, NFC chip and dual-band 802.11ac WiFi with MIMO technology.

Price and availability

At the moment the company has not revealed neither the price nor the launch date of the Sony Xperia XZ Premium. But we already anticipate that it will not be an economic terminal. As a reference we can tell you that the Sony Xperia XZ that we tested in November of last year has an official price of 700 euros.
