Those who have seen it in its presentation have realized that this mobile is baptized as Sony Ericsson, but in reality the Xperia S is the first phone that we will know exclusively under the Sony brand. Thus, the Sony Xperia S is presented as the founding model of a change of era, and of course it has many arguments to serve as a brand new starting point for the new stage.
The Sony Xperia S bets on three points to respond to the rest of the competition: first, it presents a careful and minimanist design, in the line of other products from the Japanese firm, with a light band that changes color depending on pending notifications.; second, a very high resolution screen, capable of concentrating 342 dots per inch in its 4.3 inches, being the mobile with the highest definition on the market - above the Retina panel of the iPhone 4S and its 326 dpi -; and third, a twelve megapixel camera and FullHD video recording equipped with a series offunctions that place it at the head of its segment.
With no confirmed launch date or prices on the horizon, the Sony Xperia S is the great bet for 2012 by the Japanese firm, in the absence of new models of this line being unveiled at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Let 's look more closely at some of the features of this Sony Xperia S.
Design and display
The Sony Xperia S is a spacious, robust mobile, weighing 144 grams in hand. The case retains the classic Sony Ericsson logo, but presents a sleeker, more minimalist look. In the lower area it shows a horizontal band that reacts to notifications and notifications from the terminal, so that it can be configured with different colors depending on the alert that the device has to report.
The screen has a diagonal of 4.3 inches mounted on a panel that the manufacturer calls Reality Display, which is neither more nor less than the answer to Apple's Retina: a resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels that supposes a concentration 342 dots per inch, the highest on the market.
Connectivity
The Sony Xperia S is not badly equipped at this point either. The inevitable connections on any smartphone high - end - 3G, Wi-Fi, DLNA, GPS, Bluetooth, microUSB, 3.5 minijack milĂmteros - we must add others that, although slowly permeating among smart phones, even they are not as widespread as we would like.
For starters, the Sony Xperia S equips an NFC proximity communication chip. This would make it possible for the terminal to work with the Google Wallet application - which at the moment only works on Nexus mobiles - with which we could turn the phone into a virtual wallet, as well as carry out many other operations compatible with this system.
Another point that should be noted is that the Sony Xperia S includes a video and audio output port of the highest quality, as long as we connect the terminal to a compatible screen or monitor through a miniHDMI to HDMI socket. With this, the Sony Xperia S can become a portable video player.
Multimedia and photo camera
Although the Sony Xperia S is not equipped with a multimedia playback system ready to recognize advanced video formats as standard - such as DivX, XviD or MKV - it is compatible with most of the most popular media that the user may require. The strong point, in this sense, is located in the enriched functions that the Sony Xperia S is equipped with: Surround 3D surround system -both virtualized through headphones and in case we launch the audio signal through HDMI -, xLoud bass nuance and music track recognition system.
It also has native access to Sony's online services, such as Qriocity, a system similar to Spotify, although licensed by the Japanese firm. It is also PlayStation certified, allowing you to access the PlayStation Suite platform to download games.
As for the camera, it is a twelve-megapixel Exmor-R sensor with an LED flash and a lens with f / 2.4 aperture. At the same as the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S, this phone integrates the system premiered in cameras Nex-5 Nex-7 and A77 of the company itself Japanese, according to which we could capture images in three dimensions by scanning function riding images with stereoscopic effect that we could view on compatible screens -not from Sony Xperia S itself -.
As for the video, the Sony Xperia S can film sequences as FullHD with a rate of 30 frames per second. This mobile also has a secondary front camera, equipped with a static resolution of 1.3 megapixels and sequential 720p, so that it is capable of serving us to make video calls with high video quality.
Hardware and system
One point that could generate controversy in the Sony Xperia S is the presence of a dual-core processor. This reminds us of when, a year ago, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc was presented, a very interesting model that remained stagnant in mononucleus technology, while the rest of the manufacturers overtook it on the left with powerful dual-core chips.
Thus, these days history repeats itself. The Sony Xperia S becomes the first mobile in the house with a dual-core processor. The problem is that it comes at a time when competition is prepared to make the leap to technology quad-core -based architecture quad core -. In fact, NVIDIA has already shown its Tegra 3 chip in the Acer Iconia Tab A700, and in just a few weeks HTC and Samsung terminals equipped with next-generation hearts that bring out the colors of this Qualcomm at 1.5 GHz could be released.
Furthermore, the Sony Xperia S carries a RAM installed a GB, which serves as support for the processor dual-core already described. It also carries a significant load of internal memory: no less than 32 GB expandable by microSD cards of up to 32 GB additional.
Another section where the Sony Xperia S could get a slap on the wrist is in the operating system. And it is that although in the future it will carry Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich - ICS, or Google's most advanced platform -, at the moment it is known that the Sony Xperia S will go on sale with Android 2.3.6 Gingerbread. It is shocking to see that the guys at Sony do not throw all the meat on the grill with their high-end -and inaugural model for its new stage, as we have said- premiering it with the most powerful and complete version of the company's leading operating system.
Autonomy
The performance in use and at rest of the Sony Xperia S is, at least according to official ratings, very remarkable. Using a battery charged with 1,750 milliamps, it is capable of developing a duration in intensive use of up to eight and a half hours, which extends to 450 hours, if it comes to checking how long it lasts when idle.
Feedback
The proposal with which Sony definitively becomes independent of the brand that has joined it to the Swedish Ericsson is very interesting. It is undoubtedly a Sony team in its purest form, especially designed for fans of the Japanese firm: a device with a careful appearance to the last detail, functional and powerful, although without resorting to all the most cutting-edge advances of the moment.
However, the presence of the twelve megapixel camera or the very high resolution screen helps to cushion some of the points where the manufacturer abdicates in competition with other manufacturers - such as in the absence of a quad-core processor or the native presence of Android 4.0 -. In the absence of knowing the price - it will not be a team below 600 euros, of that there is no doubt - the Sony Xperia S is a highly recommended mobile for those looking for design and power, as long as they do not mind not wearing everything to the last.
