For some time now, many users have been reporting different GPS problems in Xiaomi. Apparently the positioning fails or does not work in applications such as Google Maps or Waze. In this case, the source of the problem may lie with the phone's hardware or software. While in the first case the only feasible solution is based on going to the official Xiaomi technical service, the second case is easy to fix through a series of methods, which we will see below.
The steps that we will describe below are compatible with any version of MIUI and Xiaomi mobile. We can apply them, therefore, in models such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, the Redmi Note 5, the Redmi Note 6 Pro, the Redmi Note 7, the Redmi Note 8T, the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the Mi A1, the A2, the A3, the A2 Lite, the Mi 8, the Mi 9, the Mi 9T, the Mi 9T Pro, the Redmi 5, the Redmi 6, the Redmi 7, the Pocophone F1 and versions like MIUI 9, MIUI 10 and MIUI 11.
Turn off location accuracy enhancement
Although it may seem counterproductive, the truth is that this adjustment can cause problems with the GPS of some Xiaomi phones, such as the Xiaomi Mi A1, the Mi A2 or the Mi A2 Lite. To deactivate the precession improvement, just go to the MIUI settings; specifically up to the Passwords and security section.
Within this section we will go to Location and finally to the Location Accuracy option that we can find at the bottom of the interface. In the probable case that the option is active we will deactivate it to fix the Xiaomi GPS problems.
And turn on high-precision GPS mode
In the same Location section there is another option that can help us solve GPS problems in MIUI.
We are talking about the High precision mode, which, as the name suggests, helps to improve the precision of the GPS using all the sensors and connections that the phone has: GPS, WiFi and mobile networks. The battery consumption, however, can be skyrocketed if we use applications such as Google Maps.
Download GPSFix to fix the GPS on Xiaomi
GPSFix is a powerful application that helps to reconnect the GPS sensors of the mobile with the main satellites of the Earth, such as GLONASS, Beidou or Galileo.
Once we have downloaded the application, we will open it and provide you with the location permissions. Later we will click on the Start Fixing button. After clicking on it, the repair process can take several minutes (more than 10 in some cases).
Clear cache and data from Google Maps and Waze
Or any other GPS application. Sometimes Xiaomi GPS problems can be due to a problem related to the application itself. Before proceeding with the uninstallation of the application in question, it is recommended to clear its data and cache.
In this case, the way to proceed is as simple as going to the Applications section in Settings. Then we will go to Manage applications until we find Google Maps, Waze or any other application that requires the use of the GPS chip. Within the application settings we will click on Clear data and finally Clear cache and Clear all data.
If this does not work we will have to reinstall the application again to rule out that it is a problem with the sensors.
And reset the phone to factory settings
In the event that none of the above has worked correctly, the only viable solution is to reset the phone to factory settings, not without first making a backup copy of all the data that we want to keep, because we will lose all the information on the device by the way.
To reset a Xiaomi mobile we will only have to click on My device in Settings and then on Backup and reset.
Within this menu we will select the option to Delete all data and finally All files on the phone. If we have somewhat old versions of MIUI we can find this setting in Additional settings / Backup and restart / Delete all data.
