Beyond Android or iOS, other operating systems coexist, less known, but gradually gaining ground. KaiOS is one of them. Currently, it is available in more than 100 million devices, although only in low-cost ones, since this platform was designed to run on low-cost mobiles. One of the next manufacturers that could turn to KaiOS is Nokia.
In the last hours some images of a terminal of the company have appeared, which bears a lot of resemblance to the Nokia 220, and which seems to be governed by KaiOS. In any case, there are some doubts about it. The most relevant part of the image is the presence of the Google Chrome icon. Don't forget that KaiOS is an open source fork of the defunct Firefox OS. However, there is no official Chrome for KaiOS, which indicates that it could be "Touchless Chrome", an alternative to KaiOS based on Chromium. It is not official yet, but it was leaked a few months ago.
The doubts are even stronger when we know that the system icons, as they are shown in this filtered mobile, do not fully correspond to KaiOS or to what has been seen to date from Touchless Chrome. We can say that it is a mixture of the two. From Androidpolice they assure that it is much more likely that the phone is running an updated version of KaiOS, in which Google has already invested millions of dollars.
Whatever it is, and what Nokia prepares, what is evident is that KaiOS will continue to grow to reach more and more inexpensive devices, with few resources at the hardware level. The system is prepared to go fast and fluid in those terminals with very little RAM and a very tight processor. We can establish a similarity with Android One, also designed to work on basic mobiles. We will be very pending to inform you of new details as soon as we have more news about Nokia's plans in this regard.
