The incessant trickle of rumors continues about the highly anticipated new high-end terminals from Samsung, Samsung Galaxy S5 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4. According to the latest news in the Korean media, the company is thinking of lowering costs by introducing PLS LCD type panels in these devices.
It is the same technology that is already present in Samsung tablets, such as the Nexus 10 (made for Google) and the Galaxy Note 10.1, and whose production is estimated to cost 20 percent less. Thus, it would be possible to lower the final price of these new devices and face the increasingly fierce competition, which is fighting hard to snatch the throne from Samsung in terms of sales.
Currently, both the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy S4 use AMOLED- type screens, which in their latest versions have managed to match the quality of the best LCD panels while maintaining the advantages of OLEDs (such as greater black fidelity). In contrast, LCD panels display more natural colors and require less energy for tasks such as browsing web pages. However, these latest information would conflict with other rumors that pointed to the arrival of Super AMOLED panels with 2K resolution.
The advantages that PLS (Plane Line Switching) technology brings with it over LED backlighting are listed on Samsung's official website, stating that the former is superior and is currently the best on the market. It is a development of the South Korean company, which in theory improves both the precision and the quality of the image compared to another of the star technologies in current panels: IPS. Its viewing angle is capable of up to 178 degrees, with a 100% sRGB color gamut and 16 million colors to achieve the most realistic fidelity possible. Consumption is also up to 30% lower than IPSand it avoids that the color is distorted in some areas, reaching 90% uniformity with more intermediate gray tones between whites and blacks. Finally, the response time, which ensures that we do not see trails when there is a lot of movement on the screen, improves to 5 milliseconds.
The new Samsung Galaxy S5 would arrive in April 2014 and not in the first quarter of the year, as had been thought, and among its main novelties it could include a 64-bit processor (like the iPhone 5s, the only terminal that in these incorporates such time advance), a 16 megapixel camera and metal casing to break the trend of previous models, based on the polycarbonate.
For its part, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 would include a spectacular 20 - megapixel camera and submitted on similar dates to those of the Galaxy S5. It only remains to wait a few more months to find out which rumors are true and become reality and which end up being discarded.
