IPhone and iPad offer many functionalities with iOS and iPadOS and soon, with the new versions of both operating systems, we will be able to carry out very interesting functions. For example, adding widgets to the home screen on iPhones or writing with Apple Pencil and automatically converting to text from iPad. But what about the ability to duplicate apps? Can it be done on iPhone and iPad without jailbreak? We check it.
Duplicate apps on iOS
Currently the iPhone does not allow you to use two windows of an application at the same time. There is also no split screen option. That is, the function to use two applications at the same time. Apple has never commented on the reasons, but it is possibly a usability issue. The experience would not be very good considering that the largest screen is 6.5 inches. If we divide an app there is hardly space to see the information.
Is it advisable to jailbreak to have this option on iOS? Maybe with jailbreak there is a function to use an app in two windows. However, this action is not worth doing. iOS is a very mature system and the experience it offers is already more than enough for day to day. In addition, jailbreaking your iPhone involves different risks, such as loss of warranty.
On iPad it is possible, but with limitations
On the iPad it is different. With the first version of iPadOS, as well as iPadOS 14 coming in the fall, we can duplicate apps. Of course, with some limitations. Few apps allow us to do this. Among them, Safari, Notes and some more. Another function that Apple also allows us is to activate an app as a floating window. That is, instead of having two apps divided on the screen, we can add an app as a floating window. This is very useful for reading information. Or for example, watch a video while browsing the internet.
How can we use the same application in two windows? It is very simple. Enter an app that supports this action. For example: Safari. There must be at least two tabs in the browser. In the upper area, click on the tab you want to divide and drag it to the side. You will see an animation that divides the screen. The app will already be duplicated.
If you want that window to float and only occupy a small part of the screen, drag the tab to the right or left side, but without your finger touching the edge of the iPad. You will see how the animation changes and creates a kind of rectangle. Now, release your finger and the window will appear floating.
Finally, we can also use two applications on the same screen. What is known as 'Split Screen'. Of course, it only works with the applications that we have in the dock. In this case, the procedure is the same as when duplicating an app: drag the icon to one of the sides and wait for the animation to detect the split screen. As simple as that.
