The Korean Samsung and the Finnish Nokia are the firms that sell the most smartphones in Europe. These are the conclusions of a study prepared by the IDC consultancy that we have been able to learn about through Engadget. It refers to the latest data produced at the end of the second quarter of 2011, which is left taking into account that the manufacturers that have been taking the top positions for years remain in their positions.
So much so that between the two telephony giants they take over more than half of the smart mobile market (smartphones, let's not talk about mobile phone sales in general, where they aggressively underline their joint leadership).
In total, 54 percent of the sales of these complete terminals are signed by Samsung (33 percent) or Nokia (21 percent). So much so that the third manufacturer in sales, Apple, has almost half the number of mobile phones sold compared to Nokia, reflected in a rate of nine million compared to 4.6 million terminals sold.
Apple is closely followed by another of Android's godparents, the Taiwanese HTC, which has a seven percent share of the European smartphone market (Apple holds eleven percent), the same percentage represented by RIM and its BlackBerry range (which in general terms barely sold about one hundred thousand terminals less than HTC during the second quarter of the year).
In addition to the rest of the manufacturers that participated in the distribution of the European smartphone sales pie, a total of 42.2 million smartphones were marketed during that period on the western margin of the Old Continent. In the same period in 2010, 43.5 million mobile phones were sold, with which the market experienced a decline of three percent.
However, this setback was not noticed by everyone equally. For example, in the case of HTC there was a notable increase in the sale of smart phones of no less than 121 percent. Samsung, without going any further, achieved a margin of increase of more than three million units compared to the same quarter of the previous year, while in the case of Apple the increase remained at 1.8 million terminals.
It should be borne in mind that this count took place in the period immediately prior to the launch of many of the most cutting-edge terminals of the year, and therefore, of the most interesting bestsellers that help mark distances. We are talking about the HTC Sensation, HTC Desire S, HTC Incredible S, Samsung Galaxy S II, Nokia X7 or Nokia E6.
