Although the Korean company Samsung continues to be the leader in the Spanish mobile market, Huawei is starting to follow its heels and they are already fighting to win the first place. In reality, it is difficult to foresee if the Chinese company will unseat Samsung in the near future or if the Spanish market will bring us new surprises.
In any case, Huawei has grown to achieve a market share of 22.1% in our country, a figure close to 23.2% of Samsung. If it maintained its current rate of growth, it could effectively become the best-selling brand in Spain, although the presence of other brands that could become even stronger in the future, such as ZTE, will also have to be considered.
Huawei already has a 22.1% market share
The latest Kantar data available, corresponding to the month of July 2016, show an obvious reality: the two great giants of the Spanish market are today Samsung and Huawei: the Korean firm continues to lead with 23.2%, while Huawei has reached 22.1% in that month.
The sales figures of the latest Samsung flagship models, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, have consolidated the brand's position worldwide, but in Spain a slight decline has been detected, which in turn coincides with a certain upward trend for Huawei.
The Chinese company has previously stated that it aims to dominate the mobile market in Spain by 2020, and it seems that it is a little closer to achieving it. The next few months could be a key period to consider possible leadership from Huawei if the problems with the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 batteries end up having negative consequences on Samsung's sales. Of course, the Korean company has rooted out this problem and has already given a close date to resume the sale of its new star terminal.
It is very likely that Huawei will also try to fully exploit its second brand, Honor, which presented the Honor 8 terminal a few weeks ago. It is a phone with very similar characteristics to those of the Huawei P9 but with a much more moderate price (about 400 euros), which could allow it to conquer an important part of the young public in Spain.
On the other hand, Apple is once again generating interest in our country, where the launch of the iPhone SE and the advertising and sales strategies during the summer seem to have paid off: the company has risen to a 9.2% market share in the month of July.
The data contrasts slightly with those of the first quarter of 2016, a period in which Samsung reached 28.6% of sales, compared to a 19.6% share that Huawei had. And Apple had 6.4% of the market, which has now risen to 9.2%.
In Spain, 9 out of 10 smartphones are Android
Among the data published by Kantar for the month of July 2016, the record figure reached by the Android operating system in Spain also stands out: according to the latest study, in our country 90% of the smartphones on the market use the Android operating system, versus 9.2% for iOS phones and only 0.6% for Windows. In recent months, this percentage has varied slightly but remains at 90% or even higher.
