This same week, the President of Samsung's mobile communications division announced the sales forecasts for mobile phones for this year. It also ensured that, for the first time, Samsung's mobile terminal sales would exceed 300 million units. Marketing such a volume of mobiles is not easy, because first you have to manufacture them and ensure a regular supply of all the necessary components.
This is not a crazy figure, because, according to Gartner analysts, Samsung managed to place 281,065 units worldwide in 2010, almost 20 percent more than in 2009. Of the 300 million units forecast, a fifth (60 million) will correspond to smartphones, which are the products with the highest profit margin. With this, the presence of the Korean brand in this segment will increase considerably in a single year.
And is that during 2010, Samsung sold 25 million smartphones worldwide. If now 2011 closes this year with 60 million units, that represents a growth of 140 percent. The launch of two of its most outstanding mobile products, both with Android operating systems, contribute to this increase: the Samsung Galaxy S and the Samsung Galaxy S II. The recent launch of this latest model, the Galaxy S 2, has been a great sales success during the second quarter of this year.
With these results, Nokia's reign in the smartphone segment may end after fifteen years. Nomura Research analysts predict that both Samsung and Apple will surpass Nokia in smartphone sales throughout 2011. However, Nokia will continue to lead the global mobile phone market as a whole (smart phones and others).
