Manufacturers do not only live on high-end smartphones. Samsung knows this very well and that is why it periodically launches terminals like this Samsung Squash C5010, a mobile phone with simple features and an affordable price that comes to cover what they call "entry segment". In other words, it is an ideal mobile for users who do not want to heat their heads with touch screens, operating systems, updates, downloads and other cutting-edge technologies.
The Korean multinational has not yet offered all the official details about the phone. It is speculated that it will hit the market in the coming months at an estimated price of $ 125 (just over 100 euros). At this price it will be necessary to add taxes and subtract subsidies. Due to its characteristics, the Samsung Squash will be one of those terminals that the operators practically "give away" with their pricing plans.
Design and display
Once the phone is positioned so that nobody expects more than necessary, let's start with its exterior. Physically, the Samsung Squash C5010 is practically a clone of the Samsung Shark S5350 (on the right of the image). Both are candybar type terminals with a numeric keypad and a design with irregular shapes but that fits very well in the hand. Samsung has not specified the dimensions or price of this new phone. However, the similarity of the casing with the S5350 suggests that its size will be around 115 x 46 x 12 mm and that its weight will hardly exceed a comfortable 100 grams. TheThe phone's non-touch screen offers a discrete 2-inch diagonal size with a resolution of 128 × 160 pixels.
Connections and camera
The connections of the Samsung Squash C5010 reach 3G, but not under the HSDPA protocol, so it does not exhibit the same access speed as most smartphones. Specifically, it has Edge connectivity of class 10 and UMTS on the 900 and 2100 bands. All this merriment of figures means that it is capable of accessing the internet at a maximum speed of 384 Kbp / s, sufficient agility for basic tasks such as browsing pages that do not weigh too much, sending or receiving emails or consulting some services courier. The C5010 does not have Wi-Fi to support the internet connection. It only has BluetoothWe assume that in version 2.0 or 2.1, although Samsung has not confirmed the data. The phone does not have GPS, but it does have FM Radio with RDS. The only confirmed physical connection is the MicroUSB for charging and data. Presumably, the terminal will have a 3.5 mm jack for audio, but, as with so many other things, for now we can only speculate.
As for the camera, the Samsung Squash C5010 integrates a simple 1.3 megapixel sensor (1280 × 1024 in jpg format) with video recording of which no resolution or frames per second is specified (probably VGA at 15 Fps). On the front you can see what looks like the lens of a secondary camera for video calls. There is no flash.
Hardware and multimedia
It is of little use to talk about a processor in a mobile as simple as the C5010. The internal memory is just large enough to run the software and store up to 1,000 phonebook entries. Fortunately, the terminal has the proverbial MicroSD card port with capacity for modules up to 8GB.
At the software level, the C5010 is capable of running WAP 2.0, xHTML, HTML, Java and MidP 2.0 for browsing. At the audio and video level, the terminal is compatible with AAC, MP3 and H.263 files, which is also the native format for video recording.
Autonomy and availability
Samsung has not specified what type of batteries the phone carries. Due to its structure, the same 900 mAh batteries would fit as the Samsung Shark, its older brothers in the range. Taking into account that the latter is a full 3G with HSDPA and that its autonomy is 450 hours in standby and 3.5 in conversation, we can expect that the Squash C5010 shares these specifications or slightly exceeds them. As we indicated at the beginning, the Samsung Squash C5010 will go on sale soon at a free price close to 100 euros.
The best
Despite its simple features, the C5010 offers internet connection, albeit with limited speed. The design and dimensions are perfect for someone who just wants a mobile to talk.
It can improve
Nokia has set the bar very high for mid-range or lower-middle-range mobiles. So much so that Samsung would have done well to include some "candy" such as GPS navigation or a somewhat more powerful camera.
