Samsung continues to talk after its appearance at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. After presenting its new flagship, the Galaxy S6, as well as its version with a curved screen, the Galaxy S6 Edge, the company has not forgotten about the mid-range and has just announced the Galaxy Xcover 3. Its main advertising claim is its wide resistance to water, dust and shocks, something that the top of the South Korean range lacks. For the rest, this is a fairly simple device, which will not go down in history as a great phone, but which is worth taking into account, especially for athletes and clueless.
Display and layout
We wanted to see a new ultra-resistant Samsung with a screen that withstands extreme drops and is not too small. That of the Galaxy Xcover 3 is 4.5 inches, perhaps a suitable size for a mid-range without too many pretensions. Its resolution remains at 800 x 480 pixels (WVGA). As for its design, it is quite robust, but we must bear in mind that we are facing an all-terrain terminal. Its housing is MIL-STD 810G certified, as well as the popular IP67. This means that it can withstand falls of more than one meter and remain submerged at a depth of one meter for more than half an hour.
Its rough appearance leaves no doubt that we are facing a terminal that does not stand out preciously for being slim. It is 9.95mm thick. If we compare it with others on the market, such as the Galaxy S6, which is only 6.8mm thick, we will realize that its resistance leaves no option to enjoy a stylish device. Its weight remains at 154 grams. We also note that we can have a multitude of buttons to better manage when claiming various functions.
Camera and multimedia
The camera of the new Galaxy Xcover 3 confirms again that it is a fairly basic device. The main one has 5 megapixels, perhaps it is already somewhat short. For its part, the secondary offers us a modest 2 megapixels. The good thing is that it has a flash, so we can capture images without too many problems in places with low light. Something positive to keep in mind is that the housing itself makes your lens completely protected, an advantage that not many devices on the market have and that offer a generous sensor, for example the Galaxy S6 itself.
In the multimedia section, the Xcover 3 supports a large number of basic formats (WAV, AAC, AMR, MP3, WMA, MIDIā¦) and also offers an album cover viewer, voice dictation and voice recording.
Processor and memory
Samsung has opted for a 1.2 Ghz quad-core processor for its new phone. The four cores are usually very common in mid-range phones and will be enough for the terminal to work quickly without too many problems. It will be accompanied by a 1.5GB RAM, which is not bad at all, especially if we consider that many high-end on the market still mount 2GB RAM. The terminal will arrive with an internal storage capacity of 8GB, although it can be expanded through MicroSD memory cards of up to 32GB.
In this section Samsung has managed to take a step forward compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Xcover 2, which equipped a 2-core processor at 1 GHz and only 1GB of RAM.
Operating system and applications
At the time of its launch, the Galaxy Xcover 3 will arrive governed by Android 4.4 KitKat, although it can be updated without problems to the version of Android 5.0 Lollipop. It is highly recommended to update, especially if we want to achieve a more fluid and modern system, thanks to the new Material Design interface. Lollipop will also allow the terminal to better manage its battery and processor efficiency. For its part, we can also access more current applications and reinforce our security, since it has new systems that will allow us to keep our device away from all dangers. Android It is not what is called a secure system, that is why the company works so that we increasingly have more powerful weapons when it comes to fighting cybercrime.
In terms of applications, it will be interesting to see how some of the best work on this new all-terrain Galaxy. Whether for work or leisure, we can count on some such as Facebook, Dropbox or the popular WhatsApp, which will allow us to be in contact with our friends and family. Given that it is a device that can be very good for mountaineers or those who like to enjoy nature, do not overlook some like iCairn or Naturapps.
Connectivity and autonomy
The Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3 also gives us the option to connect in multiple ways. We can do it through high-speed networks and enjoy up to 200MB download, via 3G or WiFI. The device also has GPS, as well as bluetooth 4.0. Other things that are worth mentioning is that it has an altimeter and digital compass. Despite the fact that the Galaxy Xcover 3 is a device that begs for a large capacity battery, the South Korean has added one of only 2,200mAh. We will have to settle for it and not overuse the brightness and its connections.
Price and availability
Samsung's new all-terrain vehicle is expected to be available from April at an approximate price of 275 euros. In a few days we hope to expand this information, since the company plans to show it next week at CeBIT.
