Larger screen that occupies almost the entire front
The infinite screen is a name that started with a lot of marketing load and is on the way to becoming more real every day. The screen of the Samsung Galaxy S10 + occupies more than 90% of the front, and gives that feeling of being even larger thanks to the use of a curved panel with hardly any frames. We are talking about 6.4 inches, the same size as the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 but with 25 grams less weight. Nothing bad.
The way in which it manages to take advantage of this space is through the front camera, which leaves the upper front frame and is located perforated in the glass itself. The two-sided curved screen has a 19: 9 aspect ratio (close to ultra-wide) and a Quad HD + or 2K resolution. By the way, the Dynamic AMOLED technology premieres on a mobile phone, which we have already begun to know through the 2019 brand's televisions. We still have to test its performance on a day-to-day basis, but among other things it promises a really shine high of 1,200 nits.
As expected, Samsung returns to bet on the glass for both the front and the back of the mobile. On the front it is more resistant, when using Gorilla Glass 6, while on the back it repeats the use of Gorilla Glass 5 from the Samsung Galaxy S9 +.
The cameras, again protagonists
The photographic section is once again the protagonist. The Samsung Galaxy S10 + has nothing more and nothing less than five cameras, three for the rear and two for the front. As we have said before, one of the great novelties is the perforated camera on the screen itself. Interestingly, when using a double lens, part of the minimalist effect is lost as they are surrounded by a black frame. Its position is less invasive than with the notch, but it is evident that it does not attract as much attention as the single-lens camera of the Honor View 20 (for example).
Of course, the results deserve the small sacrifice. We are talking about a 10 megapixel Dual Pixel technology sensor with f / 1.9 aperture and an 8 megapixel depth sensor with f / 2.2. What does raise a bit more doubt is its performance in low light photos, since the previous year this camera reached an aperture of f / 1.7. We will have to see how it responds in these environments, although what we are going to enjoy is the possibility of recording video in 4K resolution.
As for the rear cameras, a triple camera system is used that searches for several lenses. On the one hand, good quality photos in low light conditions (one of the lenses has the dual aperture f / 1.5-2.4). But, in addition, it also incorporates an ultra wide angle lens to capture photos with an angle of 123 degrees. And another telephoto to be able to zoom at two times without losing quality.
All this is completed with the popular bokeh or blur, which in this model is supported by a second front camera. In this case, some effects have been added that we can add later to enrich the photos. For example, to leave the object or person in the foreground in color and the background in black and white. Or a mode to simulate spinning motion and create a more dynamic feel in the final photo.
Neither could artificial intelligence functions be lacking through a dedicated chip. On the camera side, this translates into automatic recognition of 30 different scenes. And in the help to create an advanced stabilization system during video recording. In addition, the AI can recommend compositions when framing the photos.
Ultrasonic fingerprint reader, night mode…
Some of the most interesting news of the Korean company mobile are not seen with the naked eye. Starting with its ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, which is located below the screen. That means that it will be enough for us to put our finger on the panel (in the lower area) to unlock the mobile. The fact that it is by ultrasound means that it is capable of making a map of our footprint in 3D, making it safer than other readers. Of course, with the changes in its design Samsung has said goodbye to a security function to which it gave great importance. I mean the iris reader, which disappears from the S10 +.
The company has also renewed its interface with some small but important changes, such as thinking that the options within the menus are simple when we use the mobile with one hand. We also have a specific night mode so as not to tire your eyes.
For the most gamers, it must be said that this mobile is optimized for the Unreal Engine graphics engine. That is, it is designed to improve performance within our games to titles such as Fortnite or PUBG.
Finally, an interesting feature of the Samsung Galaxy S10 + is the reverse wireless charging feature (which we already saw on the Huawei Mate 20). This mode allows us to use the S10 + as a charging base for other devices that have wireless charging, such as its new generation headphones.
Price and reviews
The prices of the Samsung Galaxy S10 + make it clear that we are facing a top mobile for users looking for the best that Android can offer today. Its practically infinite screen, its curves, the quality of its cameras… Everything is designed to give a premium experience of the universe of Google icons. However, it is very likely that you will have to struggle with the shadow of the mobile with a folding screen. A device that everyone awaits like May water to give a boost to the smartphone market.
