Yesterday Apple did its usual September keynote. Although this time it was not so "usual", since it did not feature the new iPhone. The American manufacturer introduced the Apple Watch Series 6 and the new iPad Air. Those of us who follow Apple news knew that in that presentation we would not see new iPhones, but some users were somewhat disappointed. However, at the end of the month we may have a new keynote, this time with the desired iPhone as the main protagonists.
However, yesterday we were able to know one of the essential components of the new smartphones on the block. The new iPad Air has been the first device to launch the A14 Bionic chip, the processor that will almost certainly equip the new iPhone 12. But what else can we expect from the new Apple phones? We wanted to make a small compilation of everything that has been said and filtered about the new iPhone 12 to have a global vision of what we can expect in the next Apple keynote.
The A14 Bionic will be the new brain of the beast
It would be very strange if Apple did not use the A14 Bionic chip in its new phones. First because it has just been released by the new iPad Air and second because the A14x is more than likely reserved for a future iPad Pro.
And honestly, because the chip seems to be a real beast. It is a SoC with 5 nanometer process technology that integrates 11.8 billion transistors in the same space occupied by previous chips. The new CPU, which has six cores (four for efficiency and two for performance), is 40% faster than the A12 Bionic. In addition, it also improves in the graphics section, with graphics 30% faster according to Apple.
The Neural Engine has also been improved, which now has 16 cores capable of processing 11 trillion operations per second. This translates to 70% higher machine learning performance than the previous model.
Screen Models and Sizes
Surely you have noticed that at the beginning we talked about "the iPhone 12". And it is that all the rumors assure that this year we will have one of the most complete ranges of iPhone in the history of Apple. We have already seen that the company is trying to diversify to attract a wider audience, so the logical thing is to think that it will follow the same strategy with its flagship product.
If the rumors are true, the range of the iPhone 12 could be as follows:
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 Max
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
The iPhone 12, without the last name Pro, will be the entry model, like the current iPhone 11. However, this year we could have two different sizes. The iPhone 12 would have a 5.4-inch screen with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels; while the iPhone 12 Max would have a 6.4-inch screen with a resolution of 2,532 x 1,170 pixels. It is not yet clear whether all models will make the leap to OLED technology or, conversely, cheaper models will have LCD panels.
With the Pro model, the same strategy will be maintained, although increasing the size of the screens. On the one hand we will have the iPhone 12 Pro, with a 6.1-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2,532 x 1,170 pixels. On the other hand there will be the top of the range model, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, with a 6.7-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2,778 x 1,284 pixels.
These data seem to be quite defined, although Apple can always surprise us. However, what is not at all clear are the refresh rates that the screens will have. Top-of-the-range Android phones already have screens at 120 Hz or even higher, but we still don't know if we will see it this year on the iPhone. Some of the analysts assure that the Pro models will have 120 Hz, inherited from the iPad Pro, but others believe that it will not be this year but in 2021 when those screens arrive on the iPhone. We will have to wait for the official presentation to confirm it.
Will we have a new design or will Apple be a continuist again?
This year it's time. Touch design change. But honestly, we don't know what plans Apple has for 2020. Rumors point to a design change, at least when it comes to the body of the device. According to analysts, it would return to a more square design, similar to what we saw in the iPhone 4 but updated to current times. Thus, a design more similar to that of the iPad Pro would be achieved, which seem to be the equipment that marks the design lines that Apple will follow in the coming years.
What doesn't seem like it's going away is the notch on the screen. Some rumors speak of a possible reduction in its size and others claim that what Apple will do is adjust the side frames more so that the notch appears smaller, but in reality it will maintain its size. It would have been a knock on the table for Apple to get the camera under the screen, but honestly, it would be a major surprise if we saw it this year.
On the other hand, the new iPad Air includes a new Touch ID, placed on the device's power button. If Apple had managed to reduce this sensor to the size of the iPhone we could have an iPhone 12 without a notch on the screen. But these are only our thoughts, since the leaks suggest that Face ID will continue to be in all versions of the iPhone 12.
What was already quite clear, and is practically confirmed after yesterday's presentation, is that we will have new colors in all iPhone 12 models. The iPhone 12, being the most economical model, will be the one that offers the most striking colors. We will almost certainly have available the new green and sky blue seen on the iPad Air, but it could also come with some even more daring, such as yellow or red.
As for the iPhone 12 Pro, night blue seems to be the new exclusive color for this model. We do not know if Apple will keep the current night green or it will be replaced by blue. But this color has been seen in leaks and also yesterday Apple presented an Apple Watch Series 6 in dark blue. Everything fits.
No major changes are expected in the photographic section
One of the most important sections of a mobile as high-end as the iPhone is its photographic section. However, this year the rumors and leaks have focused more on other aspects of the device. So everything seems to indicate that we will not have major changes at the photographic level in the iPhone 12.
We can't take anything for granted until Apple tells it in its keynote, but all the leaks suggest that the triple camera system will remain in the Pro models. Of course, the LIDAR sensor that we already knew in the last iPad Pro will be included. It seems that Apple continues to think that augmented reality will be very important in the future.
It also appears that the dual camera system will remain on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Max. This could mean that Apple would have focused more this year on image processing, leaving aside the pure technical section a bit. And it's not something that has to be bad, on the contrary, Google has shown that image processing is almost more important than hardware.
Presentation date, launch and prices
One of the great unknowns of this generation of iPhone is when they will be presented. We know that September is Apple's month, but it was the manufacturer itself that confirmed that the launch of the iPhone 12 would be delayed "a few weeks. "
The presentation date of the iPhone 12 has not yet been confirmed by Apple. Or if? In the image that you have on these lines you can see a brief moment of the presentation video of the new iPad. In it, you see a boy writing down a date, September 30, 2020.
It might just be a crazy theory, but Apple tends to play very nice with these things. In addition, although by the hair, it would continue to be an event held in September, something important for the company. Of course, if this theory has any foundation or not we will know shortly, since if the presentation is that day, the invitations should reach the press in the coming days.
The least optimistic point to a presentation event for the middle of October, around October 12 of this year. In addition, that same day the new iPhone 12 would be put on pre-sale, thus maintaining the usual way of acting of the manufacturer.
As for the launch, we know that Apple usually launches a week after the presentation. However, this year COVID-19 could have affected production and there is already talk of a launch several weeks after the official keynote. So the release of the iPhone 12 could be delayed until the end of October.
And we only need to talk about prices. Some of the most important analysts who follow the current situation of the apple company assure that Apple will maintain the prices of the iPhone 12 with respect to the previous generation. There is talk that the cheapest iPhone 12 could have an interesting price of 650 dollars. The top of the range, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, would start at $ 1,100. According to analysts, the prices would look like this:
- iPhone 12: from $ 650
- iPhone 12 Max: from $ 750
- iPhone 12 Pro: from $ 1,000
- iPhone 12 Pro Max: from $ 1,100
These prices will rise in its transformation to euros, as is usual. To give you an idea, the cheapest iPhone 11 has an official price of 810 euros. With a Max model this year, it is possible that Apple will lower the price of the most basic iPhone 12, which would be very good news.
The last question we have is what will happen this year with storage. Apple is usually quite stingy in this regard, so we have been asking for a long time to increase the minimum storage capacity of iPhones. But seeing what has happened with the iPad (32 GB for the 8th generation iPad and 64 GB for the iPad Air), it is very possible that, one more year, the apple company decides that its mobiles will have an initial storage of 64 GB. Let's hope that at least in the Pro they start from 128 GB.
