The flexible mobile, as a concept, prototype and product made reality, has been the undisputed protagonist of most of the news of this 2019. First it was Samsung's mobile, the Samsung Galaxy Fold. Days later, the Huawei Mate X was presented, the Chinese brand's proposal for this new segment. Around two weeks later Xiaomi unveiled what was supposed to be its next star terminal. Several months have passed since the boom of folding telephones and today the state of the same in terms of tangible reality leaves serious doubts. What really happened to folding mobiles?
Samsung Galaxy Fold: the soldier fallen in battle
Samsung Galaxy Fold in picture
At the beginning of April Samsung announced, behind the scenes, the presentation of the Samsung Galaxy Fold at the end of April in some markets and the beginning of May in others. It did not take many days when the first specialized media in technology began to report screen failures in their test units. Irremediably, Samsung had to cancel the launch of the terminal scheduled for the following weeks.
What state is the Samsung Galaxy Fold currently in? The latest information we handle is that the Samsung Galaxy Fold could be delayed beyond June. Possibly until July, August and even September, coinciding with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.
Sources close to the company have claimed that Samsung has implemented a protective sheet (the same one that has proven problematic in the past) within the same panel, so in theory, the problem could have been solved. Most likely, the product is in the testing phase to avoid falling into the same baggage that the brand has been exposed to months ago.
Huawei Mate X: few weeks to launch
We were able to see it and even touch it during this year's Mobile World Congress, and according to the data that the company itself has confirmed, June and July will be the launch months of the Huawei Mate X.
At the moment, the company has not given any specific date for the release of the folding phone to the market. Logic tells us that it will be from the second half of June when we begin to hear the first rumors about the brand's flexible mobile.
If not, the company could be in the same trial period as Samsung with the Galaxy Fold to beat the screen of the Huawei Mate X against all kinds of setbacks. Already in our first tests the screen showed slight indentations in the part of the fold, so it would not be surprising that the terminal screen was giving problems to those from Shenzhen.
And the Xiaomi Mi Fold?
At the end of March Xiaomi dropped a video showing a folding phone with a design very similar to that of the Huawei Mate X and a mechanism quite different from that of the two Asian companies. The name of the device receives the denomination of Xiaomi Mi Fold, and although we have not heard of it since, it aims to be the cheap alternative to the Galaxy Fold and the Mate X.
The terminal in question would allow double folding, so that we could use the device as a common phone without sacrificing appearance or dimensions. Its launch date, far from being close, has not yet been provided by the brand or filtered by any source close to it.
Is this a real product or is the video just a prototype? Everything indicates that it is more about the second than the first, although it would not be surprising if the final design had very similar lines.
A common problem: the screen
If at the beginning the components were the main problem of this type of phones, the trajectory of the three brands with their three failed launches has shown that the problem is with the screen, and more specifically with the durability.
Since most of the development of these displays depends on Samsung and LG, it will not be until the technology of both brands is mature that the companies present their models to the market. Only time will tell us if they are nothing more than prototypes or will arrive in the not too distant future.
