- Install GCam on your Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro with this APK
- What works and what doesn't in the Google Camera app
Until a few days ago installing the GCam on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro was nothing short of impossible. As we have explained many times, the Google Camera (Google Camera in English) is only compatible with Qualcomm processors from the Snapdragon series. Thanks to the XDA community and Celzo Acevedo, well-known developer of the Android scene , installing Google Camera on the Redmi Note 8 Pro is possible. Remember that the latter has a processor signed by Mediatek.
Precisely for this same reason we will be forced to follow a somewhat more complex procedure than the traditional process, a procedure that we will explain below.
Install GCam on your Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 Pro with this APK
The first step to install the Google Camera is to download the application in APK format and its corresponding configuration file.
After downloading the corresponding files to the phone, we will install the application through the corresponding APK file as long as we have granted the browser the corresponding permissions to install applications from unknown sources.
Before starting the application we will go to the Xiaomi File Manager to make use of the configuration file named wyroczen_m8pro_3.xml that we have previously downloaded, which we can find in the Downloads folder.
Once we have located the file in question, we will copy it to the root of the storage; specifically in the Gcam / Configs folder. In the probable case that the folder does not exist, we will have to generate the path manually by clicking on the three Options points and then on Create folder.
- First folder: Gcam in the root of the storage
- Second folder: Configs in the Gcam folder
Finally we will paste the XML file in the indicated path respecting the names of the two folders. To apply this configuration we will go to the Google Camera application and double click on an empty part of the interface. For example, next to the shutter and the spool.
Now the application will launch a pop-up window that will load the XML file that we just downloaded. All you have to do is click OK to apply it correctly.
What works and what doesn't in the Google Camera app
As expected, the application is not fully functional. In our test table we have been able to verify that the use of the three lenses is totally correct: we can switch between the main sensor, the sensor with a macro lens and the sensor with a wide angle lens.
The application also has the Portrait Mode function to take images with the main 64 megapixel sensor of the Redmi Note 8 Pro. It is also compatible with Night Mode, although the frame rate when displaying the live image falls to alarming levels.
If we talk about video functions, the application generates a forced shutdown when we try to execute said function, which almost completely prevents video recording through GCam. Another problem that we have found is that it does not work with MIUI 11: after updating from MIUI 10 to MIUI 11, the application has stopped working completely.
From the original thread in XDA they have already announced that the application is in constant development, so it is expected that successive updates will be launched that make the app compatible with MIUI 11.
