How long do operators usually take to make portability effective ? Well, in the best of cases, the operator can have the customer on edge for up to three weeks. Within that period, the originating company usually makes a counter offer and things can drag on without measure. This is what the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce wants to avoid in principle. Miguel Sebastián, the minister who ignited some controversies with that episode of efficient light bulbs, has announced that the new General Telecommunications Law will oblige operators toresolve portabilities in 24 hours. That is the purpose of the draft law that was approved yesterday in the Council of Ministers.
It will be possible to change operator in just one day. This is one of the most interesting premises that has been developed in the new General Telecommunications Law. The change comes in part as a response to consumer associations that had denounced on many occasions the delay of operators in carrying out this common management. In most cases, portability demands can take up to more than a month, causing absolute boredom for the customers of these operators. Once the General Telecommunications Law is approved in Congress, the companies will beobliged to expedite this process. And it is to be appreciated.
In fact, the proposal to shorten the time between administrations comes from Europe. The fact is that in addition to complying with these regulations, the Government will also require operators to detail the information regarding prices and offers on their products or services. In turn, the Executive wants to grant more functions to the Telecommunications Market Commission (CMT), the body that manages the regulation of the sector and that resolves any conflict between the operators of our country. Before entering into force, Congress will have to approve the new legislation, which has already been approved by the Council of Ministers.
