At the presentation of the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 we were able to know the first details about the next folding mobile from Samsung. But today, taking advantage of the IFA 2020 framework, the Korean manufacturer wanted to give the prominence it deserves to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 with its own presentation. Will folding phones be the future of smartphones? Well, we don't know, but if a manufacturer as important as Samsung believes that they can have their niche in the market, we must give them the attention they deserve. Large double screen and improved design
The idea of a folding mobile is to offer a much larger screen while maintaining a contained size. To achieve this, the only way is that that large screen can be "hidden" when we carry the mobile in our pocket. Other manufacturers like LG have tried various ways to have a second screen, but the idea of a screen that can be folded in on itself seems to be the best option.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 has two displays. The interior screen is the folding one, it has a total size of 7.6 inches, resolution QXGA + (2,208 x 1,768 pixels), a refresh rate of 120 Hz and up to 900 nits of brightness. But be careful, because it is a variable refresh rate, since it adapts to the use we are making of the mobile at all times.
In addition to the large folding screen, the Fold2 includes a second 6.2-inch screen. It is a panel with Super AMOLED technology and HD + resolution of 2,206 x 816 pixels that allows us to use the mobile as if it were a "normal" mobile.
To couple the two screens Samsung has made some design changes compared to the previous generation. Without a doubt, this second version improves on everything to the first, with a more robust and higher quality finish.
The manufacturer has managed to reduce the bezels on the inside by up to 27%, thus achieving a larger screen in practically the same space. But perhaps the big difference from last year's model is in the front screen, which goes from 4.6 inches to 6.2 inches.
Samsung has also improved the hinge, which now works more smoothly and securely. In addition, it is available in various colors.
A powerful processor and better photographic section
As a good top of the range, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 has the best current hardware. It is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ processor, which is accompanied by 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage.
The technical set is completed by a 4,500 mAh battery, with fast charging and wireless charging. We have a fingerprint reader on the side of the device, dual-band 802.11ac WiFi and Bluetooth 5.1.
And what about the photographic section? The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 has a triple camera system. The main sensor is 12 megapixels, has 1.8 µm pixels, Dual Pixel autofocus system, OIS and f / 1.8 aperture.
Accompanying the main sensor we have a 12 megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor with 1.12 µm pixels and f / 2.2 aperture. The set is completed by a 12 megapixel telephoto lens, with 1.0 µm pixels and f / 2.4 aperture.
At the front we also have a double system. The main sensor is inside the folding screen and is 10 megapixels, with 1.22 µm pixels and f / 2.2 aperture. The second sensor is a 10 megapixel wide-angle sensor that is located on the front, uses 1.22 µm pixels and has an f / 2.2 aperture.
Adapted software to get the most out of it
Samsung has introduced some special features so that we can get the most out of the second screen. For example, now the transitions from the outer to the inner screen are instantaneous.
On the other hand, the mobile includes the so-called Flex Mode, in which many apps adapt their interface to use the two screens. In this mode we will place one on the surface and the other we will leave it partially open. In this way we can, for example, take pictures as if we had a tripod, control video calls or control the playback of music and videos.
Samsung has also worked with third-party companies to adapt their applications to the extended screen. Microsoft, for example, has adapted Office to work similar to how it works on larger tablets. Another of the adapted applications has been YouTube, which now shows an interface very similar to that of the desktop.
Price and availability
Samsung has finally confirmed the release date of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2. It will hit the market on September 18, 2020 with an official price of 2,010 euros. It is a price practically identical to that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, which was put on sale with an official price of 2,000 euros.
