In recent times we have seen how telephone manufacturers have been managing to eliminate the notch on the screen. A perforation in the panel or retractable camera are two of the elements that have been added to avoid the notch and thus be able to insert the front sensor. Now it seems that Oppo would be devising a system that could mean a before and after. The company would be working to include the camera for selfies within the panel itself, in the style of the fingerprint reader that is already available in many high-end phones.
Oppo Vice President Brian Shen has shared a short video of what appears to be an all-screen smartphone prototype without notches. In this video the camera app is shown open, and despite the lack of a visible front camera, the screen still reflects a live view of the room ceiling. You will say then that it is possible that the terminal has a retractable camera, as is usual in some models of the company, but in the video a finger is passed over where the camera is supposed to be hidden to show that it is a smooth surface.
Shen admitted that this under-screen camera technology is still in its infancy. At this stage, it is difficult for cameras below the screen to achieve the same results as normal cameras, so there is likely to be some loss in optical quality. It is not known when we will be able to see this technology on a mobile phone, although we believe that it will not be too long.
Of course, everything indicates that Oppo would not be the only company that would be working on this front camera system under the panel. Vivo, Oppo's main rival in China and also a sister company, could also be working on a similar implementation, as already hinted at at APEX 2019 last March. It seems clear, therefore, that a new era is beginning within the telephony sector: the era without cables.
