Microsoft itself has been the one who has revealed the real storage capacity that will be available in the two modalities of the first Microsoft Surface units. At the moment two models were on sale: one of 32 GB and another of 64 GB. But, the figures that are allowed to be seen officially, will not be those that the user has available to save all their files. An example: the 32GB version will have half the memory.
In Spain, for the moment, the first Microsoft tablet will not be launched. However, since last October 26, the first version was put on sale in the United States: Microsoft Surface RT, a model that would not have the full version of Windows 8 installed and that is known as Windows RT and that is focused on computers in mobility and with slightly less powerful features than those that can be seen on desktop or laptop computers.
But the surprise has come from Microsoft's own hand. And there are two versions for sale: 32 or 64 GB of storage, but these figures are not real. For starters, the lower "" and cheaper "" model will now have 16GB of free space for users to store their personal files. While the most expensive version (64 GB) will also suffer a decrease, but not as noticeable as in the previous case: of the 64 GB, the user will have 45 GB free.
The explanations given by those from Redmond in this regard have been represented in a table. It details what elements are what make these MegaBytes "disappear". And to begin with, it can be said that of the initial 32 GB "" and that are sold "", the model actually has a 29 GB solid state disk (SSD). Hence, eight GigaBytes of space would have to be cut for the operating system, Microsoft Office RT (Microsoft's office automation tool) and other pre-installed applications. While the system restore tools occupying another five GigaBytes. This results in the actual 16GB of empty space.
For its part, the top model has a 58 GB disk "" sold as 64 GB "". Hence, it would be necessary to cut the same space as in the lower model; that is, 13 GB less. So the result of the subtraction would be 45 GB. Therefore, the user should weigh which model he is really interested in, knowing what space he is going to have available, from the outset.
Now, the Redmond also explains the different ways to get more space. First of all, reference is made to the SkyDrive online storage system, which is owned by Microsoft and offers a free space of seven GigaBytes. On the other hand, it also refers to the MicroSD card slot that Microsoft Surface has on one of its sides and where cards of up to a maximum of 64 GB can be inserted. While the last option would be to resort to the use of external elements such as a USB memory or a hard disk connecting them through the USB port that the touch tablet also has.
