Fans of Lumia devices are in luck. And the company Microsoft has decided to extend the catalog of smartphones which currently has available to its customers, equipped with Windows Phone 8.1. The new Microsoft Lumia 640 is a device aimed at a mid-range, which stands out for having a large 5-inch screen and that works through a quad-core processor, prepared to offer a performance that meets the demands of those users looking for a convenient and affordable solution. It includes an 8 megapixel camera and has up to8 GB of internal storage, always expandable through 128 GB memory cards. Here is the in-depth analysis of the technical sheet of the new Lumia 640.
Design and display
If we get to talking about design, you will see that the Lumia 640 does not present great contrasts. In fact, at first glance it is clear that Microsoft has wanted to preserve the proposed line of argument until now. A design finished in polycarbonate plastic, very thin and pleasant to the touch, and rounded shapes, make the Lumia 640 very comfortable to hold. The phone in question has dimensions of 141.3 x 72.2 x 8.8 millimeters and a weight that reaches 145 grams, with the battery included. The terminal will go on sale in four different shades: white, black, blue and orange.
And what about the screen? This is undoubtedly one of its most important elements: the window from which the Lumia 640 is able to show everything that is. The panel in question has dimensions of 5 inches (diagonally) and has a resolution of 1280 x 720, suitable for playing multimedia content. It is actually an IPS LCD screen with a density of 294 dots per inch and an excellent Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protective layer that will fight to keep the terminal free from accidental bumps and scratches for as long as possible.
Camera and multimedia
Most Microsoft terminals have large cameras. And although each one is adapted to the characteristics and to the public to whom it is directed to the telephone, practically all offer a very rewarding experience to users. This is also the case with the Lumia 640. For the occasion, Microsoft has decided to include on this phone sensor 8 megapixels that allow us to capture photos at a maximum resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels. As a complement, we have to mention the LED Flash, essential if we want to take photos in poorly lit scenes or even at night; as well as autofocus, face and smile detector, 4x digital zoom, backlight sensor and dynamic flash.
As if this were not enough, the owners of this phone can enjoy applications such as Lumia Camera, Lumia Refocus, Lumia Selfie and Lumia Moments, the photographic suite that will help us to retouch our snapshots or classify them, among many other functions. The front camera is much more discreet. It only has 1 megapixel, but the truth is that it will serve us perfectly to make selfies and video calls.
In the multimedia section, the Lumia 640 gets a good grade. The phone is perfectly prepared for the reproduction of contents (music, video and photos) in the most used formats, so you should not have any problems. For the rest, we can indicate that the smartphone includes FM Radio with RDS, Internet Radio and such interesting services as Xbox Music and MixRadio.

Memory and power
At the heart of the terminal we find the engine of this smartphone . We must talk about a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, composed of a quad-core architecture and the ability to run at a clock frequency of 1.2 GHz. But this is not all. This chip is supported by an Adreno 305 graphics card (GPU) and a 1 GB RAM, which will allow us to enjoy good performance. However, it should be borne in mind that this is not a very high-end terminal, so it would be advisable not to overload memory with applications or files that we hardly use and that fill space in a useless way.
If we look at memory, we cannot speak of great capacities either. In fact, the Lumia 640 only has 8 GB of storage space. Luckily, and in the event that the user needs more space, it will always be possible to expand it with microSD cards of up to 128 GB, which is not little. This functionality is complemented by 30 GB of free cloud space with OneDrive.
Operating system and applications
We have already indicated to you at the beginning that, how could it be otherwise, Microsoft has installed the latest version of its mobile operating system in the new Lumia 640. We are talking about Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim, an edition that has many improvements and functionalities, including the voice assistant Cortana. But this is not all, because for the occasion, Redmond has loaded its phone with a lot of applications and services. This includes Office 365 Personal, free storage with OneDrive or Skype. This in terms of productivity. In the entertainment section, you have to point apps likeXbox Music or MixRadio, very interesting for those who want to listen to streaming music and enjoy new songs and artists without the need for subscriptions.
Users will be able to connect to the Windows Phone Application Store to download all kinds of applications and content that will be used to expand and improve the terminal's functions. Either way, the user will find apps such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIN or Evernote installed as standard, among many others.
Connectivity
And we continue with this analysis, seeing how this Lumia 640 is doing in the connectivity section. In order to reach all audiences and to do so with a good guarantee price, the company Microsoft has decided to present two different versions, which are distinguished only by be compatible with 4G or 3G networks. For the rest, both will share connectivity for wireless networks WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, DLNA and GPS with A-GPS support. In addition, to strengthen connectivity between devices, the Lumia 640 is also equipped with other technologies such as Lumia Beamer, Lumia Storyteller, Play To DLNA and Neighbor Aware Networks.
In the section on physical connections, we have to have the minimum: a microUSB 2.0 input, to connect the phone to the computer; a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microSD card slot. It should be noted, on the other hand, that the 4G or LTE version includes a double slot for SIM cards.
Autonomy and availability
We finish this analysis with a look at the battery of the terminal. According to the technical sheet, the Lumia 640 has a built-in lithium ion battery with a fairly high capacity (2,500 milliamps). This should offer, according to tests carried out under current standards, an autonomy of 864 hours in standby and 17 hours in conversation. However, despite the fact that it is a fairly tight forecast, it should be borne in mind that the autonomy of any terminal can be affected by different external factors such as the state of the network, connectivity, the most used apps, temperature or the condition of the battery, which tends to lose steam over time.
If you are wanting to get this equipment, we can tell you that you are in luck, because the Lumia 640 will be on sale in Spain from this month of April. The 4G edition will be available for 160 euros, while the one compatible with 3G networks will be sold for 140 euros.
