You connect the mobile to the PC ready to finally transfer the files, but something is not working. Your computer does not recognize your mobile device so it does not appear in Windows Explorer and the only thing that is enabled is the upload option. Has it happened to you?
This problem is more common than you think, especially with certain brands of mobile phones. It has a solution? In most cases, yes, and we will tell you about it below.
Configure the USB connection on the mobile
If you have already checked the USB cable, the port and all the basics to verify that they are in good condition, and you have not found the problem, then take a look at the configuration of the USB connection on the mobile.
When the process works well, the mobile gives you options to choose the type of transfer you want to make (as you see in the first image), but if it does not recognize the device this option does not appear on the screen. If you rooted the mobile or installed a new ROOM, the MPT configuration may have undergone changes in the process. To force this setting, you'll have to tap into a Developer Mode option.
So first it is necessary to activate the Developer Mode on the mobile. To do this, you just have to click several times on "Build number" until Developer Mode is activated. Depending on the model of your mobile you will find it in Settings or Configuration >> About the device >> Software information >> Build number.
Once activated, enter "Developer Options" and choose "USB Configuration", as you see in the second image:
Choose the second or third option while you have the mobile connected to the PC. Or if you have a Samsung mobile and you want to simplify the process, use the code * # 0808 # in the phone's dialer to see USB Setting. Choose AP (under USB) and MTP + ADB (Under USB Setting), give OK and restart the mobile.
Activating the "USB debugging" option has worked for some, a function that makes it easier for developers to carry out their tests by facilitating the connection between their mobile and any computer. It is not an option that we have to manipulate lightly and it can cause conflicts if you have it permanently activated, but you can use it as a test.
If it does not immediately recognize the change in the USB configuration, turn off the phone and restart it after a few minutes. Or if you want to be a little more extreme, remove the battery from the mobile, wait a few minutes and then restart the mobile. Note that these options will only work if the USB connection has been misconfigured for some reason.
Configure the drivers on your Windows computer
If the first has not worked, we go on to verify the drivers in Windows related to your mobile device. To do this, search for Device Manager (using the Windows search engine or by right-clicking on the Windows icon) to see all connected devices.
Look for your mobile connection in "Other Mobiles" or "Portable devices". The name of your device will not appear since it does not recognize it, you will only identify it as "Unknown Device". Select it with the right mouse button to bring up the context menu.
At this point you can try two menu options:
- Uninstall the device. This can be a solution if there is a conflict or error in the configuration since it will uninstall the drivers that correspond to your Android mobile. Once the process is finished, you disconnect the mobile, restart your Windows computer and reconnect the mobile to begin the installation of the device from scratch.
- Update driver. In General Windows 10 keeps all drivers updated, but you can try.
In this second option, it will ask you if you want Windows to automatically search for an update or if you prefer to do it manually by searching for the driver (previously downloaded) on your computer. If you prefer to carry out the process that way, you can download a software update tool such as Outbyte Driver Updater.
You just have to download it to your Windows computer, install it, and then select the file from "Browse my computer for driver software" and it will perform the process automatically. The process is always carried out with the mobile connected to the equipment.
Or you can select "Choose from a list of drivers available on the computer" and choose the one you see marked in the image:
These steps fix various bugs that could be causing the problem, whether it's drivers syncing, outdated, or having duplicate software.
Setting up your teams from scratch
If nothing has worked for you at this point, you can choose to reset the phone to factory settings, although keep in mind that it is a tedious process, since it will erase all files forcing you to create a backup copy of the content you want to save.
On the other hand, if the problem with your mobile started after a Windows update, try going back to the previous version. To perform this action you just have to go to Windows Settings >> Update and Security >> View update history.
The first option you will find is "Uninstall updates", and once you select it, it will show you the list of recent updates. Just choose the latest update (or the one you think causes the conflict) and click Uninstall. Or if you do not want to complicate with this option you can simply reset the computer from Recovery Options >> Reset PC.
But being realistic, if it has not worked adjusting the connection settings from the device side and neither the driver settings from Windows, it is possible that your mobile has a hardware problem. For example, the charging PIN may be faulty or damaged, or any related component that can only be fixed by a specialized person.
