There are times when our mobile does not go as smoothly as expected of it, driving us crazy with delays, lags and even times when the screen is locked and we can do nothing more than force the restart. This is common in terminals that already have a certain time (if the guarantee offered in Spain is two years… it is for something) but if your mobile is less than 24 months old it is not so common to find slowness in it, having most of the time solutions at your fingertips.
This time we are going to focus on the most common solutions and tricks for when your Xiaomi mobile is slow. Xiaomi differs from the rest of Android terminals in that it incorporates the MIUI personalization layer, aesthetically similar to iOS (it lacks an application drawer) and with a large amount of customization. This has two sides: a good one, since the user is able to leave the terminal much more to taste than if they had stock Android, but also a bad one, since it is usually a heavy layer and that, sometimes, can work a little slower than normal. However, the MIUI layer is increasingly optimized to give a better user experience.
If you have a Xiaomi mobile phone and it is slow, look carefully at the following solutions and tricks that we propose, taking into account the age of the terminal. If after putting these tricks to lighten your mobile you see that there are no changes, go to the store where you bought it and make your guarantee effective, which is why we have it.
My Xiaomi mobile is slow. What I do?
Delete files that you no longer use
It is essential that your Xiaomi mobile does not accumulate junk files that slow it down. As with your computer, the more full its internal storage is, the more erratic and slower it will become. MIUI has a system application for the user so that the mobile is always clean. You can locate it in the 'Security' application within the rest of the installed applications. When you open the security application you have to enter the 'Cleaner' section. It is the first one you see as soon as you enter, adorned with a trash can icon.
Automatically, as soon as you enter the mobile, it will enter cleaning mode, making a complete scan of it. First of all, we will be shown how much free space we will have after cleaning and a breakdown of everything we will remove. If you look closely, in the upper right we have the icon of a brush. By pressing it we can delete duplicate photos, uninstall applications that we no longer use (the system will automatically detect them) or delete large files.
Within the ' Thorough cleaning ' section, if we click inside the upper right gear-shaped icon we can adjust the cleaning reminders, the size of the recycling bin and even add a shortcut icon on the home screen. A very practical tool to always have your mobile clean.
However, you can also use third-party tools as effective as Files by Google or the always recommended SD Maid.
Restart the mobile
Indeed, it is good to restart the mobile from time to time, just like you do with your desktop computer. Do not do it too frequently, but every two to three weeks. This can fix specific fluidity problems but you are never going to save battery with this method nor is it advisable to do it more often than we have indicated. If the mobile has been completely frozen, you must restart by holding down the unlock button for about 10 seconds until it restarts normally.
Uninstall apps that you no longer use
Throughout the useful life of our mobile we download and download applications to test them. In most cases, after testing it, we leave it installed there and our phone ends up looking like a graveyard of useless applications, similar to the desktop of a teenager's computer. There are tools that inform you of the applications that you no longer use, or that you use but very infrequently. For example, we have already told you about one of them, 'Security'. With this application we are going to check which applications are the ones we use the least to be able to uninstall them without any fuss.
We open the 'Security' application and go back to the 'Cleaner' option. On the next screen we look for ' Uninstall applications '. You are already told the number of applications that you can uninstall because you don't use them. Be careful, this does not mean that you do not need them because there are applications that we barely open but that have their function: for example, if we use Netflix only during specific travel times, it will appear in this list. A list in which we can see how long we have not used the application, to assess whether it is worth maintaining or uninstalling it.
To uninstall it, we just have to mark it and click on the bottom button 'Uninstall'. Automatically, the mobile will uninstall the applications you have marked. It is recommended to restart the mobile after finishing the task.
Delete recent apps in multitasking
Android is an operating system that optimizes its resources well, so that we hardly have to reach into the system for it to be fairly fluid. However, and depending on the RAM memory of our device, it would be more or less useful to close applications that we have open by hand. It is very simple: depending on the RAM memory we can have more or fewer applications open without affecting the performance of the terminal. The higher the memory, the more applications we can have open. And although the system usually closes, automatically, applications that cannot remain open, from time to time it is necessary that we do it ourselves.
To do this, we just have to open multitasking. If we navigate through gestures on our mobile, we must make a gesture with the finger from the bottom up and hold the finger up for a few seconds, until multitasking opens. If we use the buttons on the navigation bar, you must press the one you have just to your right. To discard an application you just have to slide it aside and that's it.
Streamline on-screen animations
When we move through the different applications and screens of our phone we can see what is called 'application animation'. We see them when opening and closing an app, when locking and unlocking the phone, when taking a screenshot… and these animations, by default, can be very attractive but give us a feeling of slower use. To do this, we can make these animations go a little faster or, directly, eliminate them. How can we do this? Very easy.
First we are going to enter the phone settings and in the first option that appears 'About the phone', we press. Now, on the next screen, click seven times on 'MIUI version' until a small window appears informing you that the developer options are activated.
Next, we are going to go to the 'Additional settings' section within the settings. On this screen we go to 'Developer options'. We scroll until we locate three different sections:
- Window animation level
- Animation level of transitions
- Animation duration level
By default it appears with a 1x animation scale. Try putting it in.5x or, directly, deactivating them. You will see how from now on you will feel that the mobile is faster than before.
Format your mobile
It is one of the most radical ways, and perhaps for that reason the most effective, to make your mobile 'come back to life': leave your device as if it had just come out of the box for the first time. Formatting the mobile is also something convenient to do from time to time, especially with important, heavy updates (when changing Android version, for example). Of course, you have to bear in mind that if you leave the mobile as fresh out of the box you will lose everything, everything stored inside the mobile. Of course, if you have a microSD card in your mobile, everything inside it will be respected. That is why we recommend that you make a backup copy of the content of your mobile and, for example, upload it to the cloud. For this you can use your Xiaomi Mi account.
In 'Additional settings' we are going to go to 'Backup and restore' and finally ' Delete all data '. On the next screen, we mark 'All files on the phone', we put our password for the Xiaomi Mi account and it will start formatting. Do not touch, under any circumstances, this process because you can leave your mobile unused. Once the formatting is finished, you must configure the mobile as if it were the first time. Once configured, restore the backup you saved from the same 'Backup and reset' screen. If you have not fixed the problem, reformat it and only save the photos, videos and other important files, do not reset anything else.
Try the light versions of your applications
There are alternative versions, lighter and faster, of some of the most used apps such as Facebook. Try to use them instead of the official versions because they need less power to work, they use less battery and they allow your mobile to go faster.
Change your phone's battery
A tremendously effective way to make your mobile go as fast as the first day. You can try to change it yourself by using one of the many tutorials that swarm the net, but we recommend that you either use the warranty if your device does not have two years of use, or go to a specialized technical service for such purposes.. However, when they give you the budget, assess whether it is worth changing the battery or going for a new one, directly.
Root your Xiaomi mobile
At tuexperto.com we are never going to ask you to root your mobile, as it is a process that requires experience and can put your mobile in danger, since it is about allowing third parties to modify the system. And this cybercriminals like. But if you want to root your mobile there are very simple ways to do it. Although you will first have to request that the bootloader be unlocked, a process that can take up to two weeks. If everything you've read so far sounds weird, try other Xiaomi tricks and forget about walking around in the guts of your terminal.
