Thanks to USB OTG technology, our mobile can have new functions. We can connect our mobile to a pendrive, an external disk, a keyboard or a mouse, among other possibilities. Or if we use a USB Hub, then we can use both the keyboard and the mouse at the same time on the mobile.
But not always everything works correctly, and this can cause us some headaches. "My Samsung does not detect OTG", "My mobile does not recognize OTG", "OTG stopped working on my Samsung", are some of the complaints from users.
If this happens to you with your Samsung mobile, don't worry, we'll see some possible solutions. These steps and tips work with Samsung Galaxy A10, A10e, A10s, A20, A20e, A20s, A30, A30s, A40, A50, A60, A70, A70s, A80, A90 5G, Galaxy M10, M10s, M20, M30, M30s, M40, Galaxy S9, S9 +, S8, S8 +, S7, S7 Edge, S6, S 6 Edge, Galaxy S10, S10e, S10 Plus, Galaxy A6s, A8s, Galaxy J4, 4+, J6, J6 +, among others.
Check if the mobile supports OTG technology
The first thing you have to do is check if your Samsung model has support for OTG technology.
The devices we mentioned have OTG support, but if you have an older Samsung mobile, check this information. Go to the phone manual. But if you don't have it at hand, you can go to the Samsung page and look for the model of your mobile.
There are also applications in the Google Play Store that allow you to know this information. One of them is USB OTG Checker. You just have to install and start it to show if the mobile is suitable or not for OTG technology.
Check if the OTG cable works well
If you are already sure that your mobile is compatible with USB OTG, then the next step is to check that the cable is not the problem.
For this, you need another mobile or tablet with support for OTG technology, and that works correctly. If you see that you are not successful in recognizing the pendrive, or external disk when connecting the OTG cable to the other mobile, then it is an indication that the cable is faulty. You'll have to browse Amazon and buy a new USB OTG cable.
When choosing a new USB OTG, opt for newer models and well-known manufacturers. If you are looking for a generic one, it may be old and do not take into account the specifications of the new mobile models.
Check if the mobile connects with the PC
If the mobile has support for OTG technology, and the USB OTG cable is in good condition, it remains to see if the mobile connector is damaged. For this, use a PC or laptop.
Simply use the USB cable that came with the mobile to connect it to the PC. If this is the first time you do it, you may need to install the drivers for your Samsung in Windows and configure it to work with external connections via USB.
If you connect the mobile with the PC and you see that it only begins to charge the battery, it is because the connection was partially successful. For the connection to be successful, the PC has to show a directory with the name of the mobile phone in Windows Explorer.
If this does not happen, the problem is with your mobile. In this case, you will have to check the data port with a professional. That is, the mini USB port where you connect the cable to charge the mobile, or to connect it with the PC.
On the other hand, if both the mobile phone and the OTG cable are working perfectly, it is time to pay attention to the storage medium.
Format the storage device
If the problem you have with the USB OTG is that it does not recognize the pendrive (and you have already tried several different ones), then a simple solution is to format the USB drive in FAT32.
Taking a pendrive as an example. How can you format it so that your mobile can recognize it through the OTG cable? Following a few simple steps from the PC. Connect the pendrive to one of the computer's USB ports, and once it is recognized, open Windows Explorer, and right-click on the device.
And from the context menu choose the option "Format…", which will open a wizard to format the USB drive.
Find the "File system" section, and in the drop down text box choose the option "Fat32 (default)". Then check in the "Format options" section that "Quick format" is marked.
It only remains to hit the "Start" button to start the process. Once finished eject the pendrive safely and you are ready to test it. With the pendrive formatted with the Fat32 system, connect the OTG cable to your mobile, and then the pendrive to the OTG cable.
If everything is correct, you will see that your mobile will tell you if you want to use the new device as external storage, or it will show you (depending on the Samsung model) directly the contents of the pendrive or external disk.
