We already knew that MediaTek was developing 5G chipsets designed for the mid-range, but now they have confirmed the plans and shared some interesting details.
Mediatek 5G chips
The difference of the Mediatek SoC in relation to other similar proposals is that it has an integrated modem, multimode support and an interesting combination of features.
Some details they have shared about the SoC is that it features ARM Mali-G77 that will be combined with ARM Cortex-A77 CPU performance.
On the other hand, artificial intelligence will be in charge of the APU 3.0 processing unit, which will provide functions such as real-time autofocus. And in addition, it offers support for 4K videos at 60 fps and 80MP when it comes to cameras.
And of course, the Helio M70 modem will be essential to make 5G possible, promising a download speed of up to 4.7 Gbps and uploads up to 2.7Gbps. The SoC will be under use of 7nn manufacturing processes with all the advantages it offers for the demands of 5G connectivity without sacrificing performance.
2020 the year of 5G
According to the plans shared by Cai Lixing, CEO of the company, they will show some progress of their SoC in the third quarter of 2019, but only in 2020 will they begin mass production.
We already know that 2020 is the designated year for many brands (such as Huawei, Qualcomm, etc.) that are preparing their 5G proposals. If everything follows the agenda they have shared, we will see many options for manufacturers of mobile devices.
Proposals like those of Mediatek are designed for manufacturers who wish to launch mid-range devices with 5G at more affordable prices. For example, OPPO and Vivo may be among the first brands to integrate these 5G chips.
So we will see mobile devices with 5G connectivity much cheaper than those that have been launched so far.
