Few are the mobiles that currently do not have the capacity to insert two SIM cards. Some even have the ability to insert two nano SIM cards and a micro SD card at the same time, with a total of up to three cards in the same tray (the Honor 8X is a good example of this). But, are there mobiles with three SIMs or Triple SIMs? The truth is that they are, although they are hardly known and have been on the market for a long time. Will we see Triple SIM phones soon? Are these types of mobiles really useful? We see it below.
Why aren't there mobiles with three SIMs?
Although it is true that there are smartphones with trays of up to three SIM cards, at present practically no brand presents mobile phones with this type of technology. The reasons are diverse.
In the first place, the interest of users in having this type of device is low. Except for countries like China or Japan, the use of up to three SIMs at the same time is negligible in the rest of the world. This is the reason why the only models presented so far with this technology come from brands of Chinese origin.
The second reason why this type of technology is not popular is because of the space occupied inside smartphones. Having a tray with three nano SIM cards and a micro SD card can exceed the width of the mobile in height. One of the possible solutions could be to have several trays, however, at a time where miniaturization and space optimization in phones is increasingly important, its implementation is unlikely, at least in high-end mobiles.
Finally, and surely one of the most important reasons why manufacturers do not choose to integrate this type of technology, is because of energy consumption. Currently, the use of two SIMs at the same time causes an energy expenditure that unless we have batteries with more than 3,700 or 4,000 mAh capacity, the autonomy of the device will be reduced in less than a day of use. The use of three SIMs at the same time could almost triple the consumption of a mobile with a single SIM.
The hope that remains in this regard is that manufacturers such as Qualcomm or Mediatek design modems with lower energy consumption, something that today is being carried out only in technologies based on two SIM cards. Also noteworthy is the development of eSIM technology implemented in the iPhone XS, which, combined with current Dual SIM technologies, could lead to phones with up to three and four SIMs.
What Triple SIM mobiles are currently on the market?
Four are only the mobiles that have this type of technology, at least from well-known brands in Spain.

The first of them is the Coolpad Mega 3, a 5.5-inch phone with HD resolution that has an outdated version of Android today. The terminal has a tray with three SIMs with 4G connection capacity, and today it can only be purchased through stores such as eBay for a price that reaches three times the original (up to almost 400 euros). In fact, it is the only mobile that we can find for sale. The rest of the terminals are out of print, and we can hardly get hold of them even on pages like eBay or Wallapop.
The three remaining terminals are as follows:
- Acer Liquid E700 Trio
- GooPhone X1 + Tri-SIM
- ESON Tri SIM Android Mobile
Can I convert my mobile into Triple SiM?
As impossible as it may seem, yes. Currently we can use adapters like this one from Simore that allow us to connect up to three SIMs at the same time, generally two SIMs and one nano SIM.
The operation of this type of adapters is very simple: all we have to do is insert the male part of the adapter into the nano SIM tray and add the remaining two in the space of the adapter in question. Of course, we must bear in mind that two of the cards will be left outside the phone, which is why we recommend that you bring a protection case.
