So far, if you are not connected to a WiFi network and you use your mobile network to update, download apps or games, you have a maximum limit of 150 MB. But as of this update, the limit is extended to 200MB, as mentioned on PhoneArena.
Unless they were very complex apps, very long episodes of video podcasts or too heavy games, this limit is reasonable. If you try to download apps or other larger content, you will see a notification that reminds you that “apps over 200 MB” must connect to a WiFi network.
From the beginning, Apple was gradually expanding these limits. For example, at the launch of the App Store, the limit for downloads without WiFi was just 20MB, and over the years it has been increasing to 50MB.
This restriction tries to protect users from the consequences of accidental downloads with their data plan. If it happens that you accidentally use the mobile network to update data consumption, the problem would be minimal and you would not find that you have updated all the apps or downloaded a movie eliminating your entire monthly plan.
However, data plans and download speeds improve dramatically every year and Apple should consider a new strategy for those users who can and want to take advantage of these conditions. And on the other hand, let's keep in mind that the next generation of iPhone will have the expected 5G support so data consumption will be in the clouds.
How to turn mobile data downloads on and off
While the ability to update or download with mobile data is a good option for the impatient, it is not advisable if you have a limited plan. If you want to deactivate this option, remember that you have to go to Settings and select iTunes and App Store >> Mobile data.
You can change this setting as many times as you want, depending on your needs or circumstances. So if you change your data plan or there is an update that you want to install urgently, you can go to Settings and activate Mobile Data temporarily.
