It seems that this year advances in the field of mobile photography will come hand in hand with the zoom. Oppo has recently presented its new lens technology that will allow, among other things, to zoom up to magnification without any loss of quality thanks to the interpolation of three independent cameras. Let's remember that to date, the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are the only two phones on the market capable of achieving a zoom of up to 5x. This time it is Samsung that could implement such a number of increases. And it is that a few minutes ago it was announced through Phone Arena that the company is on the verge of acquiring one of the most important companies in terms of mobile photography.
Samsung's high-end could have cameras up to 25x magnification
It was this morning when Phone Arena announced that Samsung is in negotiations with Corephotonics, a company specializing in camera lenses that has more than 150 registered patents in relation to camera zoom. The purchase in question would be valued at nothing more and nothing less than 160 million. This makes us think that the arrival of cameras with optical zoom systems would be imminent. Possibly for the 2020 or 2021 generation of phones.
But beyond the number of patents of the company, Corephotnics has a patent that thanks to the fusion of images and multi-pixel scaling, it would be able to reach the chilling figure of 25 increases without any loss of quality. This figure is currently achievable only by professional cameras, which could mean a before and after in terms of mobile photography when approaching the quality of these. Other aspects such as portrait mode or night photographs would also be influenced by the implementation of this system, helping to improve the quality of focus when making the bokeh effect or taking shots in the open sky (the Moon, the stars, the city Lights…).
At the moment, neither Samsung nor Corephotnics have commented on the possible agreement between the two companies. It remains to be seen if the negotiations finally come to fruition. If so, we would be facing one of the most important mergers in recent years due to the consequences it will have on the next generations of Samsung mobiles. The Samsung Galaxy S11 or Note 11 could be two of the candidates to launch this new technology.
