DxOMark, the well-known mobile photography website, has updated its list of phones with the best cameras for selfies or front. Last week the same website already updated its list of mobiles with the best rear camera. On this occasion, DxOMark launches its first front camera comparison, with several high-end phones at the helm such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or the Google Pixel, among many others. Regarding the tests, DxOMark has valued both the quality in the photographs and in the video recording. The results obtained are the average between these two chamber tests.
Google Pixel 3
The Google phone is proclaimed as the mobile with the best camera for selfies or front. In technical data, we find two 8 and 8 megapixel front cameras with focal apertures f / 1.8 and f / 2.2 and RGB and wide-angle optics. In practice we find two cameras capable of capturing a large amount of visual field thanks to the wide-angle optics. The portrait mode and photos with complex lighting conditions stand out above all of these. Also the definition and stabilization of the video thanks to Google software.
His overall score is 92.
Samsung Galaxy Note 9
Samsung's high-end reaches second place on the podium with a single front camera. Specifically, it consists of a single 8 megapixel sensor with a focal aperture f / 1.7. Of this highlights the higher quality in night photographs or in full lighting situations (thanks to the larger focus aperture) and the video stabilization. With respect to the Google Pixel camera, the quality of the selfie is somewhat lower and the colors achieved are less real due to the AF system compared to the PDAF of the Pixel.
The Note 9's final score is 92, the same as the Pixel. You can see our review in this link.
Xiaomi Mi MIX 3
We return to phones with dual front and front cameras. In the case of the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3, we find two 24 and 2 megapixel cameras with f / 1.8 focal aperture. In this we find one of the best portrait mode next to the Google Pixel 3. The definition and detail of your photos also stands out above other cameras thanks to the 24 megapixel sensor. On the other hand, we lose quality in night photographs, obtaining some noise in complex light situations.
His final score is 84.
iPhone XS Max
iPhone XS and XS Max
The Apple terminal could not be missing. Its specifications are quite restrained: 7 megapixels and f / 2.2 focal aperture. According to the DxOMark website, the quality of photography and video competes directly with the first mobiles in the ranking in conditions of good light. The downside to your camera comes when these lighting conditions aren't the best. This is due, in essence, to the opening of its front camera.
The final score is 82. The analysis of the iPhone XS Max from One Expert in this link.
Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus
A terminal, in essence, traced in specifications to the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, with an 8 megapixel camera, AF system and f / 1.7 focus aperture. The difference with respect to this comes from the hand of the software, with generally somewhat poorer results in all possible scenarios. Worse color calibration, worse light treatment and ultimately, lower quality.
His score stays at about 81 points. Here the analysis of the terminal.
Google Pixel 2
Another Google phone in the ranking. Unlike the Google Pixel 3, in this one we have a single 8 megapixel front camera with f / 2.4 focal aperture and 1.4 um pixels. Results very similar to those of its older brother: excellent portrait mode and good color calibration. The main negative point regarding the Pixel 3 is the brightness in low light environments, which is somewhat worse, and the lower versatility due to the implementation of a single sensor.
Your score? 77, not bad for a cell phone from almost two years ago.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro
In the ranking of mobiles with the best rear camera we saw how the Mate 20 reached the first place. On this occasion, he remains at the gates of the top five reaching a sixth position. It integrates a 24 megapixel sensor with Vario-Summilux optics and f / 2.0 aperture. The results, according to our own tests, are somewhat erratic. A portrait mode that does not stand out from other devices and results somewhat poor in night photography. What does stand out are its camera modes: play of light, HDR, blur effect, AI, beauty modeā¦
75 points is what Huawei's high-end gets. Our first impressions on this link.
Samsung Galaxy S8
A mobile that turns two this month. Its technical characteristics are the same as those of the Galaxy S9 and Note 9. 8 megapixel sensor with focal aperture f / 1.7 and AF system. As with the Galaxy S9 Plus, the quality of this drops compared to its predecessors. Worst results in practically all possible situations. A somewhat poor dynamic range, and fewer modes than the S9 and Note 9. In videos the difference is not so noticeable, yes.
The overall score of the S8 is 73 points. The review of the Samsung Galaxy S8 in this link.
Huawei P20 Pro
The P20 Pro reaches the ninth place in the ranking with a camera in specifications nailed to that of the Mate 20 Pro. 24 megapixels and f / 2.0 aperture. Results very similar to those of its predecessor. Photographs with good detail and an improved white balance during the day and with low definition and brightness at night. The portrait mode and the different modes it integrates are not the best in the world, but at least we have several types of photography.
67 points is what we get in the high-end of Huawei. Our Huawei P20 Pro review in this other article.
iPhone X
The Apple terminal of the last generation is the one that reaches the last position of mobile phones with the best cameras for selfies. Same sensor as that of the iPhone XS Max, with 7 megapixels of resolution and focal aperture f / 2.2. Good portrait mode, good handling of HDR and quite natural colors. Of course, like the iPhone XS, night photography is not the best, and the degree of opening of the lens does not allow group selfies.
The overall score of the iPhone X is 71 points. The full analysis here.
