The majority of Internet users between 18 and 27 years of age prefer to use their smartphones to surf the Internet instead of computers, be they laptops or desktops. This is what emerges from a study prepared by Opera, the developer of the web browsers of the same name. This is a survey conducted worldwide among young people who have the Opera Mini browser installed on their mobile phones.
In countries like Indonesia, South Africa or Nigeria, more than 90 percent of the users of the so-called Generation Y opt for the mobile device when accessing the Internet. On the contrary, the countries where it is more frequent for young people to use the computer to connect to the Internet are Poland, Germany, the United States and Brazil. This means that a larger fleet of smartphones does not imply a greater use of mobile Internet worldwide.
This study on the state of the mobile web carried out by Opera also produces other interesting results on the habits of use of mobile phones. In the United States, almost 90 percent of the young people surveyed use their mobile phones to share photos; at the other extreme are the Vietnamese with 67 percent. Also, nearly half of Gen Ys in both China and the United States read few printed newspapers.
Another curious fact is that young Chinese (84 percent of those surveyed), Germans (84 percent) and Vietnamese (83 percent) are the most likely to propose a romantic date via short messages (SMS). In contrast, only 44 percent of the young Americans interviewed choose this method of making appointments.
