At LG they continue to innovate in their G family with the latest advances in technology. It does so through the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, where it has presented the LG G8 ThinQ. A new high-end terminal that bets on the advances of its Z Camera, capable of scanning and measuring depth. Something that has applications as useful as measuring the internal veins of the user's hand, something more secure than reading fingerprints, or controlling the mobile with gestures without even touching the screen.
All this in a mobile with a design that bets on the whole screen in front, but with a generous notch or notch to house all this new camera technology. Of course, its back is clean and elegant, with two cameras and a fingerprint reader in the middle of the back. Of course it comes with the Snapdragon 855 processor and 6 GB of RAM. Enough power to move any application or game of the moment. And with a 3,500 mAh battery to ensure that the entire team has power throughout the day. But let's see in more detail those functions that the Z camera provides.

Hand ID, or when the fingerprint is not enough
In the design of this LG G8 ThinQ little is noticed about the presence of the aforementioned Z camera. Unless we look at the notch or notch on the front, where the aforementioned lens and an infrared reader are included. A system reminiscent of Apple's Face ID with the iPhone X, but with a different operation and bases.
The idea is that this Z camera has ToF technology, capable of measuring distances and other details. Thanks to its joint work with infrared, it is able to recognize the shapes of the veins in the user's hand. Thus, you only have to plant the palm of your hand to recognize the shape, thickness and other details of that person and exclusive to unlock the mobile. Something that is done in a single instant, but which is more secure than the usual fingerprint reading. And here the virtues of this ToF camera called Z camera do not remain.
Thanks to its ability to read infrared rays, it quickly detects and measures the distance from the object where these rays have bounced. This translates into well-focused selfies and at high speed, better than the usual camera system. Precisely because of this same ability, it is able to recognize the user and their face, without the option of imitating them with printed images. The Z camera reads in 3D, so it is necessary to have the same face and the same features to be able to unlock the terminal. All this without losing sight of the fact that this camera is not affected by the absence of light in the environment or other common problems in face recognition.
But what draws the attention of this Z camera are the Air Motion or air controls that the LG G8 ThinQ allows. These are gestures such as pinching the air or waving the hand to control different issues on the mobile: switch between applications, raise or lower the volume, cut an incoming call or even take a screenshot.
Portraits and videos with Bokeh effect
Having this special camera in the LG G8 ThinQ also offers interesting new functions directly in the photographic apparatus. For example, selfies with bokeh effect are much more detailed thanks to the possibility of detecting up to 256 levels of depth in a scene. All this by focusing quickly with autofocus and getting sharp and clear photos.
It is also striking to be able to measure depth not only in photos, but when video is being recorded on the front camera. Something similar to what Instagram Stories does with its focus function, and that give videos a professional touch with this kind of portrait or moving bokeh effect.
Widescreen OLED display for seeing and hearing
Another key feature of the LG G8 ThinQ is its 6.1-inch panel in Full Vision or 19.5: 9 widescreen format. And its technology is OLED, which implies saturated colors and great brightness to show everything in detail. Even more so considering that its maximum resolution is QHD +, or 3,120 x 1,440 pixels, with a density of 564ppi to show everything defined to the eye. But also to the ear.
This Crystal Sound OLED screen serves to be used as the speaker diaphragm of this LG G8 ThinQ. In other words, the screen itself is an element of the loudspeaker, thus making it possible to eliminate from the design the slot to place a loudspeaker itself on the front.
In the sound aspect, this LG G8 also comes complete. It has different sound enhancement technologies to be able to broadcast in high fidelity of up to 32 bit. Elements such as DTS: X or HiFi Quad DAC allow you to compress the sound without loss of quality and take advantage of its resources to broadcast with great detail in terms of sound.
Five cameras in total
If we count all the objectives of this LG G8 ThinQ we run into a terminal with five cameras. And it seems that the triple rear camera configuration is here to stay. This covers all the needs between main camera, wide angle and telephoto lens.
For this, this mobile includes a 12MP main sensor with aperture f / 1.5 (1.4μm / 78˚) for all kinds of normal photos. But there is also a 16-megapixel sensor (f / 1.9, 1.0μm, 107˚) with a super-wide lens to capture wider scenes. Finally, there is the third rear lens to portray distant details with its 12 megapixels and its telephoto lens of f / 2.4 (1.0μm / 45˚).
For its part, on the front we find two objectives. The main one is 8 megapixels with aperture f / 1.7, bright enough to get decent selfies when the scene is somewhat dark. It is accompanied by the aforementioned Z camera, used for metering in focus or to use the mobile without touching the screen.
