The Chinese company Lenovo seems to be determined to conquer the mobile phone market around the world, especially beyond the borders of the Asian territory. A new rumor indicates that Lenovo could be very interested in buying BlackBerry, to such an extent that even its executives would be willing to shell out between $ 15 and $ 18 per share when, today, BlackBerry shares are trading at a figure close to ten dollars.
If these rumors are confirmed, Lenovo would have it even easier to not only continue expanding in the US market and the European market, but could also offer greater resistance to its direct competitors in the Asian market. And although we are talking about a rumor, we must not forget that Lenovo is a company that currently has the necessary business volume to afford an operation of this size, and this is demonstrated by the fact that at the beginning of this year Lenovo bought Motorola (the company that until then belonged to Google) in an operation valued at 2,910 million dollars.
BlackBerry, for its part, has decided to stay out of these speculations and has not made any official statement on the matter. Even so, to know the more than possible outcome of these rumors, it is enough to take a look at the spectacular fall of this company in the mobile phone market during the last five years. According to figures for the second fiscal quarter of this year 2014, BlackBerry has a net loss of 207 million dollars (which is notably better than the losses of 965 million dollars in the same period last year), while revenues are around 916 million dollars (a significant drop compared to 1.57 billion dollars from last year).
In the event that Lenovo gets to buy BlackBerry, the BlackBerry 10 operating system could end up being one of the biggest losers from this operation. This operating system has less and less presence in the mobile telephony market, and as regards the European territory, BlackBerry OS is present in less than five percent of the smartphones sold in Europe.
On the other hand, it should also be noted that the latest launch of this company has been the BlackBerry Passport, a smartphone that incorporates a 4.5-inch square screen (with 1,440 x 1,440 pixels resolution). Below this screen is the physical QWERTY keyboard, a keyboard that has been one of the hallmarks of this company during its best years in the mobile phone market. In regard to other technical specifications of the BlackBerry Passport, this terminal includes a processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 of four cores running at 2.2 GHz,3 gigabytes of memory RAM, 32 gigabytes of expandable internal storage by a card microSD external, a main chamber 13 megapixels, OS BlackBerry OS in version 10. 3 and a battery with 3450 mAh capacity. And the starting price? 650 euros.
