It is no surprise to anyone that the sale of smartphones and tablets has decreased since the quarantine was applied in several countries. Faced with the obvious economic crisis that is looming, some brands have chosen to slow down their production. It is the case of Apple. At the beginning of March, the company closed all physical stores in Spain in order to avoid new infections. According to statements by different workers at Foxconn, the company responsible for the production of iPhones, now those in Cupertino have decided to significantly lower the production rate of their devices.
Apple cuts production of iPhones in China
This was confirmed by Financial Time a few hours ago. According to the British source, different workers at the Foxconn plant in Zhengzhou, Henan province, confirmed to the newspaper Apple's decision to reduce the production of iPhones, even with the iPhone SE 2020 at the doors of its departure.
One of the workers at the plant has confirmed that the staff has not worked since April 10. Others have come to say that temporary workers who were hired in February are beginning to be dispensed with. One of the workers at the Taiwanese Pegatron plant even claims that this figure rises to 1,000 workers.
According to various statements, the move made by Tim Cook's company is quite unusual. Apparently, Apple increases the rate of hiring from February to accelerate production for new launches. In this case we would talk about the iPhone SE 2020 and the future iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.
New sources have emerged around these statements that affirm what the Foxconn workers claim. TrendForce, a well-known technology research company, claims that iPhone production has dropped from 200 million units to 180 million in the first quarter of the year alone. Mia Huang, an analyst at TrendForce, says that iPhone users have decided to delay the renewal cycle of their devices due to the current economic situation. According to this same source, Apple would have seen its mobile phone sales reduce by up to 36% compared to the previous period.
