The Huawei P30 Pro has already been presented to the public in Paris and we have already had the chance to test it by hand. The differences from the previous generation are diverse. In addition to the photographic section, the P30 Pro brings a series of improvements compared to last year's models. It also loses some of the virtues that have characterized the 2018 P20 Pro. But what are the differences between the Huawei P30 Pro and the Huawei P20 Pro? We see it below.
More cameras with higher zoom, better portrait mode and more brightness
The first novelty that the Huawei P30 Pro presents to us compared to the Huawei P20 Pro comes from the hand of the camera, or rather, the cameras.
TOF camera
This year's model includes three RGB sensors with wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle and telephoto lenses of 40, 20 and 8 megapixels whose focal aperture is located at f / 1.6, f / 2.2 and f / 3.4 respectively. The last sensor, far from being a common telephoto lens, is responsible for taking photographs with digital zoom of up to 50x (10x in hybrid and 5x in optical) thanks to the periscope it incorporates.
As for the last sensor, this part of a sensor responsible for measuring the depth and volume of bodies, which in reality translates into better photographs in portrait mode. Huawei has also introduced the Huawei AIS system, capable of taking advantage of the benefits of night mode to lighten the dark parts of photos without raising the ISO. The latter, by the way, is capable of reaching a value of 409,600 points never seen to date on a mobile phone.
If we move on to the Huawei P20 Pro, we find a similar camera setup. Three sensors, two RGB and one monochrome with 40, 8 and 20 megapixels of resolution. The focal aperture of the same is located at f / 1.8, f / 2.4 and f / 1.6, and the second lens becomes telephoto.
We lose angle compared to the Huawei P30 Pro, as well as the zoom level (3 increases in optical and 5 in hybrid) and of course, brightness and quality in the photographs with portrait mode as it does not have a TOF sensor. The ISO level of the P20 Pro stays at around 102,400 points, less than half that of the P30 Pro.
And what about the front cameras? Here the differences are less noticeable. 32 megapixel sensor with f / 2.0 focal aperture in the case of the P30 Pro and 24 megapixel sensor and f / 2.0 focal aperture in the case of the P20 Pro. The novelty compared to the latter is that Artificial Intelligence has been improved to perform best selfies.
On-screen fingerprint sensor and wider panel
The on-screen fingerprint sensor finally reaches the brand's P series. A sensor that improves compared to the Huawei Mate 20 Pro but that continues to lag behind in speed and reliability than the Huawei P20 Pro sensor.
As for the screen, here the improvements are somewhat timid. Same type of panel (Super AMOLED), same resolution (Full HD +) and a somewhat less restrained size of 6.47 inches compared to the 6.1 inches of the 2018 model.
State-of-the-art hardware and memory card expandability
As every year, Huawei has updated a good part of the components of its P series.
In technical data, we find an eight-core Kirin 980 processor along with 8 GB of RAM and 128, 256 and 512 GB of internal storage. As for the Huawei P20 Pro, the terminal starts from a Kirin 970 processor, 6 GB of RAM and a single version of 128 GB.
The differences with respect to the 2019 model come from the hand of the power (up to 75% faster in theory) and the possibility of expansion through memory cards. In the case of the Huawei P30, we can expand the storage up to 256 GB with NM + Card.
Improved autonomy and updated charging technology
The second aspect to review the Huawei P30 Pro compared to the Huawei P20 Pro is the battery. The P30 Pro includes a battery with a capacity of 4,200 mAh, 200 mAh more than last year's model. But beyond the theoretical capacity of the battery, where the P30 Pro evolves with respect to the Huawei P20 Pro is in the charging section.
In addition to including wireless charging of up to 15 W and reversible, it has a charging technology that reaches 40 W by cable. The one implemented by the Huawei P20 Pro stays at only 22 W, and does not support wireless charging.
Dust and water resistance reaches Huawei's high-end
Another novelty that the Huawei P30 Pro has brought to the Huawei P series is protection against water and dust.
Specifically, we have the IP68 certification, a type of protection that in theory allows us to submerge water up to a meter and a half deep for at least 30 minutes without suffering apparent damage. The Huawei P20 Pro, although it is somewhat resistant to immersion and splashes, does not have any type of certification.
