Screen hole, the market trend in 2020
Although the phone is an evolution compared to last year's Redmi Note 8, the truth is that its design follows the market trend during this 2020, with a notch in the form of a hole on the screen. Beyond this detail, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S has a 6.67-inch panel with Full HD + resolution and IPS technology.
Regarding construction materials, everything indicates that the terminal uses glass and polycarbonate throughout its chassis; precisely because of its weight, 209 grams. It also has P2i splash protection and a fingerprint sensor that is now located on the right side of the terminal. Also, the back is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 certification to protect it from bumps and scratches.
The return to Qualcomm and a battery of scandal?
The Redmi Note 8 Pro was harshly criticized for having a Mediatek processor. The company seems to have taken note of this by integrating a Qualcomm processor in its latest release. Specifically, the Redmi Note 9S has a Snapdragon 720G module along with 4 GB of RAM and 64 and 128 GB of internal storage of type UFS 2.1.
Although the processor is an evolution compared to the Snapdragon 665 of the Redmi Note 8, it continues to lag behind the Mediatek Helio G90T of the Redmi Note 8 Pro. But perhaps the greatest novelty of the device is found in its battery, of no less than 5,020 mAh.
Xiaomi has ensured that its autonomy extends up to two full days of use. It is accompanied by an 18 W fast charging system, something insufficient if we take into account the theoretical capacity of its battery. It also highlights the absence of NFC connectivity to make mobile payments, something that the Redmi Note 8T boasted. It does have an infrared sensor to interact with the TV and other electronic devices.
Few novelties in the photographic section
Again we find four cameras that trace in detail the configuration present in the Redmi Note 8. Specifically, the Redmi Note 9S has four sensors of 48, 8, 5 and 2 megapixels. While the former acts as the main sensor, the rest use wide-angle and macro lenses to capture photos of landscapes and nearby objects. The latter sensor uses its functions to improve the result of images captured in Portrait mode.
Beyond the technical characteristics, the company has emphasized the improvement of the Night mode of the camera application, as well as the possibility of recording video in 4K quality at 30 FPS. The secondary sensor with wide-angle lens also improves its brightness and resolution, so it is to be expected that the results will be somewhat better than those of the Redmi Note 8.
If we move to the front, the terminal has a unique 16 megapixel sensor with facial recognition functions. The novelties in this aspect are rather scarce, except for the increase in resolution in the front sensor and the sensors with wide-angle and macro lenses.
Is the Redmi Note 9S worth buying?
Assessing whether or not the purchase of the Redmi Note 9S is worth it depends entirely on its price. The company has confirmed the price in Malaysia, which will be 234 and 261 euros at the change. Predictably it will arrive in Spain at a price of 250 and 270 euros, although it is known that they will have a promotion on their departure. Is it worth your purchase?
If we have a terminal from a range similar to that of this Redmi Note 9S, such as the Redmi Note 6 Pro or the Redmi Note 7, the truth is that its purchase is not worth it due to the shortage of news it presents, beyond of the design, the battery and the photographic section. If we have an older terminal than one of those mentioned above, your purchase seems more than interesting, but only if the price drops to 200 euros or less.
It is a fact, the Redmi Note 9S is one of the best mid-range phones of 2020, as the Note 8 was already in 2019. It is also true that the Mi 9T is still the best alternative for the price at which it is presented.. After all, it is a much more complete option than that of the Redmi Note 9S.
