The screen of the OnePlus 7 Pro has left its mark in the upper-middle-range mobile market. Its 1440p resolution, combined with a 90 Hz refresh rate, has seduced everyone who has tried it. So it would not be surprising that the next generations of the high-end improve the speed of their screens. In fact, it seems that the current panels are already prepared to do so. As seen in the Xiaomi MIUI forums, the Xiaomi Mi 9 screen can be modified to reach 84 Hz.
Having a high refresh rate on a screen provides extra fluidity. This added fluidity is noticeable both in the use of the system and in the execution of games and applications. So, if you are willing to unlock the bootloader of your Xiaomi Mi 9, you can increase the refresh rate of the screen of your device. Of course, you must bear in mind that this modification could damage the screen, since it is not an innate characteristic of the device.
How to modify the refresh rate of the Xiaomi Mi 9 screen
Overclocking a display is nothing new. In monitors it is usually done to improve their performance. Even the manufacturers themselves overclock the panels to achieve higher performance. However, doing it on a mobile is not usual.
Still, we must bear in mind that it is not a simple task. We need an unlocked bootloader, as we will have to flash an image on the device's dtbo partition. The image we are discussing can be downloaded from this XDADevelopers forum thread. Here you have available both the required image file and the application we need to install it.
The application that we will need to install the modified image is called " Lanthanum System Toolbox " and we have it in APK format. Once downloaded, the first thing we will do is create a backup of our current image. To do this we will open the application and in the menu choose the partition configuration. Once here, we choose the option "Image dtbo" and export. This will create a backup and store it on the device.
Now that we have the backup we can proceed to place the modified image. To do this we select the dtbo option, flash image and choose the dtbo file that we have downloaded. Once the modified image is flashed, we will only need to restart the device.
Those who have tried it assure that the change is noticeable, and a lot. But they also comment that the panel is slightly tinted red, which makes it not look 100% correct. I said, if you want to try it, do it very carefully and always doing the backup first.
