At the beginning of the week, Samsung unveiled its first folding phone to the press: Samsung Galaxy Fold. After the event, journalists from different media, such as Bloomberg, CNBC or The Verge, were able to take it home to test it. The truth is that, far from what was thought, the experience has not been so positive. Journalists have reported that the units delivered have problems on the screen.
It is not a common problem, each of the journalists mentions a different one, although all related to the panel. For example, Mark Gurman, editor of Bloomberg, maintains that after two days of use, the Galaxy Fold's folding screen gradually stopped working. Notably, Gurman claims that he removed a protective plastic that was attached to the main panel. Samsung later confirmed that the plastic should not have been removed, though it did not give a prior warning not to be removed during testing.
For his part, Dieter Bohn's problem from The Verge is completely different from Gurman's, although it is also related to the screen. This journalist talks about a small bump that appeared in the hinge area of the OLED panel, something that ended up breaking some lines two days later. In any case, Dieter Bohn thinks that this small lump could have appeared after placing clay on the back, a material that is used when making the videos and photos for the review of the terminals.
To all this we must add the experience of Steve Kovach, technology editor at CNBC. In a video uploaded to his Twitter account, he shows a flicker that appears on the screen of the Galaxy Fold. The editor comments that this happened after a day of use without doing anything abnormal with the equipment.
Samsung has been quick to respond to these issues. In addition to providing journalists with a new Galaxy Fold, the company has reported that they will work to fully discover what has happened to these specific units. In any case, these are specific problems and should not be alarming at the launch of the device. The Samsung Galaxy Fold will hit the US market on April 26 at a price close to 2,000 euros at the exchange rate. The date of landing in Europe is yet to be confirmed.
