This same week the distribution of Android 5.0 Lollipop among the devices of the Nexus range began to take place. The first to start receiving the update have been the owners of the Nexus 5, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10, and now that Google has published the source code of this update on its website, Nexus 4 users can also start Download and install the Android 5.0 Lollipop update on your mobiles.
Of course, at the moment the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Nexus 4 is only available via installation through a computer, so users who prefer to install the update via OTA (that is, directly from the mobile) should wait some more days for Google to distribute the file using this method.
How to install the Android 5.0 Lollipop update on the Nexus 4
Installing the Android 5.0 Lollipop update on a Nexus 4 from a factory image is not as simple as doing it through an official update, although we should not rule out the possibility of carrying out this process so as not to have to wait for Google to distribute the update via OTA.
In the event that we decide to carry out this procedure, all we have to know is that the steps shown below will take a total of between ten and twenty minutes, depending on our knowledge of mobile telephony. So, anyone who wants to install the Android 5.0 Lollipop version on their Nexus 4 today should follow these steps:
- The first thing we should know is that, once we have installed the factory image of Android 5.0 Lollipop on a Nexus 4, all the files previously stored in this terminal will disappear, so it is recommended to all users that before starting with the procedure make a backup copy of the data stored in your terminal.
- Once we are clear on this point, we proceed to download the factory image of Android 5.0 Lollipop for the Nexus 4 following this link: https://dl.google.com/dl/android/aosp/occam-lrx21t-factory-51cee750. tgz. The file occupies an approximate space of 471 MegaBytes.
- Also, in order to be able to handle all the factory image files, we also need to download the Android SDK program. This program is available for free under this link: https://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html.
Step 1. Unlock the bootloader.
We already have all the tools ready, so the first thing we should do (in case we have not done it previously) is to unlock the bootloader on our Nexus 4. To do this, we follow these steps:
- We turn off the Nexus 4.
- Once it is off, press the Volume Down and On buttons at the same time until the screen with a menu lights up.
- The moment that screen appears, we release the two buttons and connect the mobile to the computer using a USB cable.
- Next we access the root folder of the phone (that is, the folder in which all the files stored in the internal memory of the mobile appear) and we look for a folder with the name of " adb-tools ". We open this folder.
- Within this folder we have to point the computer mouse to an area where there is no file, and at that moment we press the Shift key (a key that is normally represented with the icon of an arrow pointing up) at the same time we press the right mouse click. At that time a floating window will be displayed in which we have to click on the option " Open command window here ".
- Once the command window has been opened, we enter the following text: fastboot oem unlock and press the Enter key.
- After entering the command on the computer, we have to press the Volume Up button on our Nexus 4 to then press the Power button to confirm the operation. And we already have the mobile ready to install the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.
Step 2. Install the update.
- Once we have finished the previous procedure, we turn off our Nexus 4 again.
- Now, with the mobile off and disconnected from the computer, press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons on the Nexus 4 at the same time until a menu appears.
- We connect the mobile to the computer using a USB cable.
- On the computer, we proceed to open the folder with the factory image that we downloaded in the first steps of the procedure and, once inside the folder, double-click on the " flash-all.bat " file.
- If we have correctly followed all the steps of the procedure, our terminal should automatically install the factory image and, once the file has been correctly installed, the mobile itself will restart to confirm the success of the operation.
