Kodak returns to the fray in the world of smartphones. Although the first Android smartphone launched by the legendary camera company passed through the market without pain or glory, the American company is trying again with a second device, the Kodak Ektra. A smartphone that was announced in October and is now available to buy in Europe with a price of 500 euros. Of course, the strong point of the new Kodak smartphone is its camera, although perhaps not as much as would be expected. For the rest, we are facing a device with good characteristics, but that does not stand out compared to other Android smartphonesmid-range or medium-high. We are going to review what features we can find in the Kodak Ektra.
What this terminal does stand out, for better or for worse, is in its design. And is that the Kodak Ektra looks like a smartphone attached to a camera. In the front we have a screen with IPS panel 5 - inch Full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels with a density of 441 ppi. At the bottom we have the typical three integrated buttons to handle Android functions, and at the top we have the front camera. The back offers a design very similar to that of a compact camera, with a texture that makes it easy to gripand it prevents the equipment from slipping, with a lower part finished in a small curve that protrudes from the casing, very similar to the one we see in company cameras. It also stands out, of course, the large lens that protrudes a lot from the case. On the sides of the device we find the photo shooting buttons, once again, as if we had a compact camera in our hand.
Inside the Kodak Ektra we find a Mediatek Helio X20 processor. One processor with Tri-Cluster technology and 10 cores, two Cortex-A72 cores up to 2.3 GHz, four Cortex-A53 at 1.85 GHz and four Cortex-A53 at 1.4 GHz. An ARM Mali GPU at 780 MHz is responsible for the graphics. This set is accompanied by 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, which we can expand with a microSD card of up to 128 GB. In terms of autonomy, the Kodak terminal incorporates a 3,000 milliamp battery. The operating system chosen to move all this hardware has been Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
But if something should stand out in this phone is the photographic section and the truth is that, being a good set, we expected something more from a terminal that bears the Kodak name. We have a main camera with Sony IMX230 sensor of 21 megapixels and f / 2.0. This sensor comes with an optical image stabilization system and the possibility of recording video with 4K resolution. Yes, our selfies will perfect thanks to 13 megapixels incorporating the sensor of the front camera.
Where it does seem that the company has put something more of itself is in the Manual mode of the camera, which promises to be one of the most complete in the smartphone market. In short, a terminal that could be striking with an adjusted price, but with a price of 500 euros it has great competition to face. It will not be easy at all.
