The second-generation iPhone SE already has a competitor: the Google Pixel 4a. This new Google mobile competes both in price and performance. Both models have a compact design, a single main camera and a price of less than 500 euros. What are the differences between the two devices? We review them in this article.
Compact design, but with different materials
Pixel 4a design
Both terminals have compact dimensions. Both Google and Apple have opted for a small mobile for those users who want to have a more manageable device in hand. Of course, despite the fact that the dimensions are very similar, the materials are different. Also on the front.
The iPhone SE has a glass back and aluminum frames, which gives it a much more premium feel. On the other hand, the Google Pixel 4a has a polycarbonate back, a less premium material, although possibly more resistant.
IPhone SE design
Now, on the front there are also differences, and here the Pixel 4a wins, since it has a panoramic screen and hardly any frames. While the iPhone SE has quite pronounced bezels in the upper and lower area. As a positive point, it includes Touch ID on the front, while the Pixel 4a includes it on the back.

Different screen size and technology
On the screen they also differ, and not only in size, but also in panel technology. Google has opted for a 5.8-inch OLED screen with a Full HD + resolution. Instead Apple has decided to include a 4.7-inch Retina LCD panel with an HD resolution of 720 pixels. This makes the iPhone's screen more compact and lower-resolution, which is why the Pixel 4a has a higher density of pixels per inch.
In addition, with the Google terminal we can save battery, since Android allows you to apply a dark mode. Being an OLED panel, the black pixels are off and save more battery. According to different tests, with the dark mode it saves up to 30 percent more autonomy.
High-end vs mid-range processor
The iPhone SE has an A13 Bionic chip, the same as the iPhone 11 Pro.
Big difference in performance . The Pixel 4a lags behind, as Apple has decided to include a high-end processor in this budget iPhone. Specifically, the A13 chip, the same that the iPhone 11 Pro incorporates. Although it is true that the RAM is lower, the A13 Bionic benchmarks position this chipset as a clear winner.
On the other hand, the Pixel 4a has a Snapdragon 730G processor, used in other mid-range terminals and that can hardly compete with the A13. Of course, the RAM and storage configuration is higher: 6 GB + 128 GB, while the iPhone SE has 2 or 3 GB according to different performance tests.
Android vs iOS
The Google Pixel 4a has Android 10 , while the iPhone SE includes iOS 13. In this case, both operating systems are completely different, although the truth is that iOS has a slight advantage, since Google apps can be used on the iPhone, while most Apple apps (such as Apple TV, FaceTime…) they are not available on Android.
Of course, despite the fact that the difference between operating systems is very large, the two terminals have something in common: good update support. Both Google and Apple use clean operating systems, so future update support is guaranteed on both models. At least for the next 3-4 years. Therefore, in both cases we will always have the latest version of the operating system.
Are there differences in the cameras?
Yes but no. Both the iPhone SE and the Google Pixel 4a feature a single 12-megapixel main camera. Both allow you to capture photos with HDR and perform portrait mode. Now, the results are not the same. First of all because the optics are different. Second, because each firm has a final processing through software. Therefore, the results between both models could slightly change in color, exposure, detail, shading etc. Of course, in both cases the results promise to be very good.
In the front camera there is a difference. E l iPhone has a megapixel sensor 7, while the lens for selfies of the Pixel 4a is 8 megapixel.
And what about the battery?
Apple does not give details of the battery capacity of the iPhone, so it is difficult to tell the difference between the two models. In addition, it also depends on the optimization of the processor and the operating system. Therefore, it must be compared with the duration data given by both manufacturers. According to Apple, the iPhone SE has a continuous video playback of 13 hours, 8 if it is streaming and up to 40 hours of audio. On the other hand, Google only mentions that the Pixel 4a, with its 3140 mAh battery, the Pixel 4a can last a day without going through the charger.
Both are compatible with fast charging and the iPhone SE is the only one that includes wireless charging.
The price: 100 euros difference between the two phones
Finally, let's see the difference in price. The most expensive model is the iPhone SE, with a price tag of 490 euros. The Google Pixel 4a costs 390 euros. That is, the iPhone is 100 euros more expensive, despite the fact that the storage is less: 64 GB vs 128 GB of the base version. Now, we must bear in mind that the iPhone SE has some more points with respect to the Google terminal. Among them, the same processor as the iPhone 11 Pro wireless charging, glass back or water resistance.
