Apparently, the US company HP does not seem to be interested in tackling the mobile phone market, but from time to time they surprise us with product presentations like the one we are analyzing on this occasion. We are talking about the HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II, a new phablet (that is, a device that due to its screen size is halfway between a mobile and a tablet) of medium-high range that is presented with a metallic finish accompanied by such features as a quad- core processor, 1 GigaByte of RAM, the Android operating system in its version ofAndroid 4.4.2 KitKat and a battery with 3,000 mAh capacity. Although at the moment the price of this device is unknown, this time we are going to learn more about it in the following analysis of the HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II.
Display and layout
The HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II enters the scene with a six-inch screen, which is quite a large size compared to devices with approximately five-inch screens that we are used to seeing on the market. This large screen size is mainly oriented towards users who need to use a mobile terminal for issues related to work or studies, since a screen of this size allows to view the content in a clear and comfortable way.
The screen resolution of this device reaches 1,280 x 720 pixels. The pixel density on the screen is set at 245 ppi, while the maximum brightness reaches a not inconsiderable figure of 380 cd / m2 (although the comparisons are odious, it should be noted that one of the high-end reference mobiles, the Samsung Galaxy S5, offers a screen brightness that reaches 400 cd / m2).
The HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II features a metallic finish, and the silver color of the case makes this phablet look sleek. In short, the design of the HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II has little or nothing to envy the highest-end devices.
The front of this terminal consists of two speakers, one located at the top and the other located at the bottom, and by three buttons of the Android operating system ( Back , Home and Menu ) that are directly integrated into the screen (so we are talking about virtual buttons). The rear part presents a much simpler aspect in which we find a large main camera (accompanied by its respective LED Flash) and an HP logo.
The dimensions of this device reach 83.2 x 165.1 x 8.98 millimeters, while the weight (including battery) is approximately 160 grams.
Camera and multimedia
The HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II is far from being a device oriented towards multimedia use, so that the two cameras that it incorporates in its housing are very simple and offer an image quality rather destined for sporadic use. The main camera is capable of recording HD video (720 pixels resolution), and sensor eight megapixels should not have major problems to offer an interesting quality pictures. In addition, this camera is accompanied by a small LED Flash, which means that it can even be used to take pictures at night.
The secondary camera located on the front of the device incorporates a much simpler sensor two megapixels. Although, curiously, this does not prevent it from also offering the possibility of recording videos with 720 pixels of resolution.
The multimedia formats supported by the HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II are: MP3, WAV, FLAC, 3GP, MIDI. All these formats can be played with the multimedia player that comes standard with this device, since all terminals that incorporate the Android operating system also include a factory-installed application that allows you to listen to music and play videos without major complications.
Power and memory
The HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II hides under its casing a Marvell (model PXA1088) quad-core processor that runs at a clock speed of 1.2 GHz. It is curious to see a Marvell brand processor in a mobile device with these characteristics, since most manufacturers tend to use Qualcomm or MediaTek processors. Even so, we will have to wait to test this product in first person to determine if the performance of this processor is up to what is expected of a device with these characteristics.
The RAM (of the DDR2 SDRAM type) that accompanies this processor has a capacity of 1 GigaByte. The internal storage space is 16 GigaBytes, of which approximately 14 GigaBytes are available to the user. This capacity can be expanded using an external microSD memory card up to 32 GigaBytes.
Operating system and applications
The operating system installed as standard in the HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II corresponds to Android in one of its most recent versions, Android 4.4.2 KitKat. At first glance, it does not seem that HP has interfered much with the native interface of this operating system, since the screenshots of this device show a layer of customization very similar to that incorporated by devices with the native version of the Android operating system (that is, a version without customizations by the manufacturers).
Being a device with the Android operating system, the HP Slate 6 VoiceTab incorporates applications installed as standard, corresponding largely to the apps of the US company Google. Among these applications we find the more common apps for Gmail, Google Maps, Google Chrome or YouTube, as well as native applications Phone and Camera.
Connectivity and autonomy
The connectivity of the HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II is divided into two sections: the section of wireless connectivity and the section of physical connectivity. On the part of wireless connectivity, we have WiFi (802.11 b / g / n with Miracast technology), 3G, Bluetooth 3.0 and GPS (with A-GPS technology). On the part of the physical connectivities have an output microUSB 2.0 (not compatible with the OTG), an output minijack of 3.5 mm (for connecting headphones and speakers) and a slotDual SIM (compatible with a microSIM card and a miniSIM card), in addition to the microSD slot.
The HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II has a Li-ion battery whose capacity reaches 3,000 mAh. As reported officially HP, the time of full charge of this terminal is around three hours, while autonomy is distributed as follows: 13.5 hours talk 2G, 10.5 hours 3G talk, 750 hours standby, nine hours of play of video and five hours of Internet browsing through WiFi.
Availability and opinions
The HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II is expected to begin being available in stores later this year 2014. To determine whether or not we are facing a recommended product, we must first wait to know its starting price, although at first glance the characteristics offer a very interesting aspect on paper. We look forward to learning more about the HP Slate 6 VoiceTab II in the coming weeks.
